Molluscum Contagiosum

Can this virus lay dormant before showing signs and can it be spread on the genitals by someone having the virus but not having sex. Through hand to hand contact?

It usually clears up within a couple of months, but it can go longer.  Your doc is just going with odds.

Since she is 8, and probably in school, and gym class, etc., it might be worthwhile looking at different treatments.  If you look at the health topics section here, they have some decent info about treatment options.  If not, check www.ashastd.org.

My 8 year old daughter just went to the doctor and he told her she had molluscum contagiosum, but that to leave it alone, dont put anything on it and it would go away shortly.  I saw some cases of people that had that for 2 years untreated.  How can a Dr tell someone it will go away, if it can last as long as 2 years?

Yes Molluscum Contagiosum can be spread through non-sexual routes.  In fact this is very common with children.  And yes it can lay dormant for a while (months).
