Mycroplasma genitalium

In early December 2015, after seeing a new girl for about two weeks, I experienced NGU. I had discharge and burning urination. The girl said she was "clean". She was tested for the same and came back negative.

I went to my gp who tested for chlamydia and gonnnoreah. Both came back negative. I was treated with single dose azthrymocin and my symptoms went away. Doctor thought it was from trauma, which I know now is probably impossible.

I got retested at a std clinic in Australia in early February for syphilis, gonnoreah and chlam and it was negative. This facility can test for mg but it failed to even ask me despite me giving an accurate history of previous ngu.

Anyway I am not sure if this is in my head but sometimes I feel a split second of urethral discomfort or tingling. The opening of my urethra is also reddish, but I think it was always like that. I wouldn't be surprised if the symptoms were psychological.

After doing some research I've discovered that I may have had mg. I've also discovered that in Australia new studies suggest a failure rate of 40% for azithromcin. I've also read that 8% of failed treatments may still resolve symptoms.

I have relocated overseas to a remote community in which I cannot be tested. I can however buy antibiotics.

Should I self treat with moxiflaxcin to make sure if I did have mg it is gone? The problem is I don't know if I even had it to begin with.

Kind regards for any and all wisdom!

NGU doesn't cause "a split second of urethral discomfort or tingling", and I have no doubt your self-diagnosis (psychological) is correct. Australia's network of national sexual health centres is probably the most professional, effective, and all around best STD clinic systems in the world. (I'm sure they agreed that your previous doc was wrong about trauma!) If they didn't think you needed testing for M genitalium -- probably because your symptoms cleared up nicely with azithromycin -- you can take it to the bank.

And by the way, the 40% azithromycin failure rate is only for NGU caused by M gen, which in turn is the cause of only 10% of NGU. And your symptoms cleared nicely on azithro, which itself is strong evidence that you were cured.

I would not recommend further treatment with moxifloxacin or anything else.
