Answers we need: mycoplasma hominis

Hey everyone, my girlfriend recently had an unusual discharge blood-like, oder free, so she went to the clinic to run some tests. she came back positive with Mycoplasma hominis. A few months ago I took a STD test and everything came back negative. Is it possible she has been carrying it all along? It doesn't really matter, i would just really like to know how severe it is. I've been researching the web for hours and it seems pretty harmless. Her doctor made it seem ridiculously serious and is putting a lot of stress on my girlfriend. We've been dating 4 years and it's honestly getting me pretty angry. The doctor says nothing about the info I found on the web and told her to come back for more "testing".
Her cytologic diagnosis came back as an Epithelial Cell Abnormality. The interpretation reads, Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). What does that mean? is it actually serious?

Any advice professional or not will be greatly appreciated. On the side note, I am not in the US, I'm Korean and so is my gf. Some clinics here in Korea are ridiculous, making patients take unreasonable amounts of tests and what not.

odds are that neither you nor your gf have ever been tested for mycoplasma before. Most labs don't bother testing for it.  As was already said, hard to tell if it was actually the cause of her discharge or just a coincidence that it was found.

your gf's abnormal pap will need follow up for. Her gyn will either have her come back in 3-6 months for a repeat pap or suggest even a colposcopy so they can get an up close look at her cervix and see if anything looks suspicious to biopsy to check for hpv.

http://www.ashastd.org/std-sti/hpv.html  has terrific info for both you and your gf to read to learn more about her abnormal pap result.

M. hominis although can sometimes not cause disease and one can carry it without symptoms it may cause Pyelonephritis,  Extragenital disease and Pelvic
inflammatory disease. It has also been associated with Bacterial Vaginosis,
Chorioamnionitis, Spontaneous abortion and Postpartum/postabortion fever.

An ASCUS pap smear result is considered to be mildly abnormal. This is the most
common type of abnormal Pap smear. ASCUS stands for Atypical Cells of
Undetermined Significance, and basically means there were mild cellular changes
and that the cause is unknown.
If you have any further questions let me know.

Mycoplasma hominis is a strain of bacteria present in the vagina. It may or may not belong to the normal vaginal flora.

As for "Epithelial Cell Abnormality", your going to have to talk to the Dr more on this. Not sure what this is.
