Herpes Question!

If herpes is a sexually transmitted disease, then why isnt it included in routine std testing? Also, if its as prevalent as people say it is, with the majority of those without symptoms, then i would figure many more people would have it?

I've always used protection and know ive had sex with a girl with hsv2. Nobody has ever suggested a blood test, not even the three doctors i saw/spoke to. I had an area i thought was herpes, had it swabbed (negative) and told i was fine? So confused.....

Also, consistent leg and feet tingling, for weeks now. Headaches and muscle aches too. Hope its just anxiety!!

If you had protected sex with a woman known to have HSV-2, I think you're fine. Your risk was  very very low. Think about it this way: Your risk over the course of a year with her is 2%.  That's not a 2% risk with each episode of sex - that's 2% over the course of a regular sexual relationship week after week over a YEAR.

You are fine. You don't need testing for herpes unless you have some noticeable outbreaks. Get off the crotch  watch, though, because your risk was extremely low.

Why aren't they testing regularly for herpes? Beats me. It might be because herpes doesn't go on to cause more serious problems like the untreated bacterial STDS can, which can affect women's fertility, and worse. I read somewhere that it's because there is a social stigma around herpes, and it could cause "psychological problems" for people if they knew.

Neither of those reasons seem adequate to me. I'm with you and agree that it should be part of routine STD testing.

You don't need to freak about this woman's herpes. But good for you for asking about it. Now you know your risk. Hell, you could keep on screwing her with condoms and your risk would continue to remain low. People who know they have herpes generally are really good about knowing their bodies and  knowing when they are having outbreaks or not.

You can also talk to her about suppressive medication if you want to continue having sex with her.

Keep in mind also that the next girl you bag may not even know she has it, and you could sleep with her. 90% of people with herpes DON'T - do not - know they have it. You are safer with someone who knows about their herpes.

I truly appreciate your comments....and just to add...this girl did tell me she was taking anti-viral medication, but not every day.

Thanks again!!

Take care,
