Syphilis RPR Test

Dear Doctors,

I am a 37 years old man. I need your advice. I am in panic.

Just two weeks ago, I had a sexual contact with a sexual worker in Berlin (a  German lady). I massaged her, licked her ****, and she massaged my penis with her fingers and gave me a protected fellatio, and we had a protected vaginal sex.

Because I got very nervous, I went to a doctor for STD tests 14 days after this sexual contact. I had hepatitis B and syphilis blood tests (RPR and TPHA), and tests for gonorrhoea and chlamydia at throat. All clear, except for syphilis RPR test, which was positive.

Actually, I am in panic. What do you think about this result? The doctor advised me to have a syphilis test again in 2-3 weeks. I have no visible symptoms in the mouth and and in the genital, and am basically heathy, though I had a bit cold at the day of the tests.

I am very looking forward to hearing your advice on this.

Best,

John

Dear JessyJames2010,

I thank you for your kind word. I had a confirmatory test (treponemal antibody test) 3 weeks after the RPR test (5 weeks after the sexual contact), which was non reactive.

Thanks again.

Best,

John

Hello

John,

I understand how a positive syphilis test would make you uncomfortable, especially after what happened in Berlin.   The good news is I doubt you caught anything from her as you used protection.   Though condoms aren't 100% or close to it for protection. for syphilis, it does make a difference.

Follow your doctors advice to retest again in 2 weeks.
I am hopeful for you, that you had a false positive.

Come back and let us know what happened.
