azithromycin twice for chlamydia?? Will it work 2nd time?

I was prescribed 1g of azithromycin 3 weeka ago in the UK for chlamydia.

Unfortunately from a bad reaction I had to a medicine years ago, I have a phobia of tablets, so I crushed the azithromycin, mixed it with water, waited for it to dissolve (about 2 hours), and drank it (very foul bitter taste).

After 3 weeks, my chlamydia is back, exactly the same stomach cramps, and discharge (I'm female).

I'm on holiday in Africa, went to see a doctor, and he said he has no doxycycline, which he should give me. so he has given me 2g of azithromycin (8* 250mg tablets). I forced myself to take the whole tablets with water, not crushed up as before.

It was difficult to understand his explanation, so I'm posting here.

My questions:

1. As I already drank 1g of azithromycin, 3 weeks ago, will the 2g I took still kill the infection, or could the chlamydia have built up resistance to azithromycin?

2. As I took the original 1g crushed up, and dissolved in water, is it possible that my body didn't digest it all?

3. MAYBE FORTUNATELY, I've located someone who actually has 6 days of 200mg a day doxycycline.  (1200mg total).  Should I also take these, as a precaution? Is 6 days enough? Is it OK to take them with the azithromycin, or should I wait 2-3 days before I start them?

I really appreciate any help, and the great advice on this website.

I hope I never have this issue again, but thanks for telling me about the powdered form of the medicine.

I'll retest, as you suggested, next week.

Just one last question that nobody has answered, is it safe to take the doxycycline at the same time as azithromycin?

I've started it this morning (1st day of 6), and I was quite nauseus, but I've read that that is not an abnormal reaction. So I'm making ginger tea, and I hope this will help it go down better.

Thanks all for advice up to now.

they do make a powder form of azithromycin that mixes easily and has a nicer taste. just a fyi for the future.

wait another week and retest just to be sure it's gone.

in the future, always protect yourself and have protected sexual contact!!  unless you've seen actual test results, trust no one!

Yes, retested.

And sorry, I also forgot to say that the guy I caught it from told me that he was cured with 1g azithromycin.

How do you know chlamydia was back? Did you retest?
