Are sleeping tablets safe?

I'm 16, and can never sleep during the night. I always have to wait until the sun rises to sleep, no matter how tired I am.
I have anxiety so I'm not sure if its from that. But my mum won't let me go on sleeping tablets because she thinks they're dangerous and that I won't wake up one day. (She's a bit paranoid) I've taken night time cold and flu tablets a few times so I get drowsy enough that I can't stay awake, and she was okay with that. so is there any way I can convince my mum sleeping tablets are okay? I even have some doubts about them.

Many people tell me,my wife included, that Benadyrl makes them sleepy.  In fact years ago when I discussed getting a prescription for Avian (or the generic) with my primary care, it was suggested I try Benadyrl first.

I think the downside to sleeping pills is dependence.  One might nope that taking sleeping pills occasionally to get in the correct sleep/wake cycle if fine, taking them year-in-year-out doesn't sound like a good idea to me.  That said, my wife takes a generic Avian every night and has for more than a year.

Taking flu medicine to sleep is a bad idea. You might ask your mom if she would object to you ntaking melatonin supplements before bedtime. These will often solve the problem.
