Hello and hope you are doing well.
Its best that he does not depend on medications for sleep. Either way to most of the sedatives (sleeping tablets), people develop tolerance, that is they stop working very effectively with time. And please don't venture to take sedatives and controlled substances without the supervision of a doctor. Besides, drug-drug interactions, we never know the metabolism status unless tests have been done to justify their prescription. So, discuss the options with your consulting doctor.
In the meantime ask him to develop good sleep hygiene measures. Sleep and get up at the same time every day, avoid smoking, alcoholic and caffeinated beverages and exercise regularly. This promotes good sleep.
Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
My doc told me to try OTC Melatonin, it does really help, its all natural and non habit forming. I would contact your doctor to make sure its ok for yourself though. Good Luck!
