Hemorrhagic Stroke/Recovery Times OK?

My sister-in-law had a hemorrhagic stroke with a intracerebral hemorrhage. This was on May 18th. They have done a Ventriculostomy. The gas man found her in the driveway. We figure it had been somewhere between 20-35 mins. before she was found. They have her in a medically induced coma where they say she will stay for the next 3-4 weeks. Is this normal? Also, they did a cat scan on the 18th, and 19th and we were told the bleeding had stopped. They are doing another one tomorrow, and they are now talking about putting a shunt in. Once again is this normal? They say if she survives (her chances are 50/50, she is still in critical/stable condition) she will have slurred speech, minimal movement of her right arm, and a limp with her right leg. Should they be able to tell this while she is in the coma? She was concious after they flipped her over in the driveway and upon arrival at the hospital which is approx. 40 miles away.We look forward to your response. Thank you,

Lost without her hanging with us!

Barbara

My father had a massive stroke on 12,august,2011.Immediately he was put on ventilaters. His heart and lungs are functioning normally ,but he is not able to come out of coma. His eyes pupils are moving.CT Scan shows that half of his right hand side brain is damged. He has been removed from ventilater on 19.aug and how he is on oxygen support.Since then 45 hours has passed and he is maintaining good heart rate and respiration rate. What are the chances of his survival?

my story is very much like tommahwk.

my mum had a severe stroke, large intracerebral hemorrhage on right hand side of brain on 20/06/2011 at about 10am. she was at hospital within the hour of signs such a slurring and left hand side body drop, but she was quiet all morning and could of had headaches and problems early on but not told us. She was still conscious and attempting communication at 8pm that evening when i was finally allowed to see her. the next morning when we came in at 10am to the neuro icu unit we were told she had deteriorated (she was barely conscious) they told us the brain bleed and swelling had gotten alot worse and they had to put her into a medical induced coma that morning to save her life. she was in the medical coma for 7 days, they tried a hypothermia machine to try reduce swelling, this did not have any affect on the swelling, and it put all her organs at high risk. we were told about 5 times she would not make it. they brought her out of the medical coma as it was doing more damage then good. they told us surgeory was not an option due to size and location of bleed and her high blood pressure.

3 weeks later she is still in her own coma, she has not woken up (we've had an eye open a few times, she was responding to pain for a few days, twitching in her eyes, but now it is just body convulsions and not alot else) the brain swelling has not gone down at all, so it is exactly the same as that morning they put her into a medical coma. her body organs are all ok once again, and her high blood pressure is now under control. the bleeding has stopped, but its just sitting and waiting for the swelling to go down (how long does this usually take?) and the blood to be re-absorbed to see if she wakes up and what sort of brain damage has been done. we've been told again she is not going to make it.

has anyone had any sort of story similar, same sort of bleed, coma, timescales, stories of hope for me to share with my dad and brother? this has been the worst rollercoaster ever and to be told she isn't going to make it so many times is just destroying us and our hope. but we still go everyday and try to talk to her for a little bit everyday. even tho they now tell us she is at high risk of catching a fever/bacteria and dying that way.

please. thank you

June 18th My best friend (my grandma) an amazingly active 80 year old had a severe hemorrhagic stroke. They gave her 6 hrs to live, and told me to call or family. It is now 3 weeks tomorrow and shes still fighting hard. She was conscious in the er for the first 15 min then fell into a deep coma. We have had a feeding tube placed in the bottom of her stomach kind of into her intestines to try and prevent aspiration. On day 15 she started opening her eyes and looking at the people in the room, and squeezing hands on command not all the time but in her more awake state. I find she does sleep i know it wounds funny as she is in a coma but she has a few hrs a day where he breathing is different and she seems more awake. The drs are baffled that she is still alive, she is a fighter and we arnt giving up either. I spend at least 8 hrs a day with her at the hospital and let her listen to music and the news like she always did. We have been told by all the drs the prognosis is low that she will wake up since the bleed is 9 cm, but we hold on to faith and the fact she was so strong before the stroke. reading your stories has given me more hope thank you.

My sister in law has had her second stroke three weeks ago.  She is home and in going to rehab 3-days per week.  Her thinking is slow, but she seems fine.  We are trying to motivate her to be more positive and to exercise more than just doing rehab.  Can any one give me suggestions how to help her want to get up and move.  She sits and wants everyone to wait on her.

It is now more than 4 months since mother suffered from Stroke affecting Brain Stem.  She can start to move her hands a little bit. However, her conscious level is still very low.  I will not give up!!
