Post-stroke Memory Deficit Rehabilitation

My 38 year old daughter has suffered a bithalamic stroke and was unfortunately not properly diagnosed when taken to the ER.  After her hospitalization she was transferred to Magee Rehabilitation Hospital for inpatient therapy where she remained for 10 days.  She has recently been discharged from that facility and will be taking Speech, OT and PT 2X/wk. on an out-patient basis.  I am concerned about her depression (although she is on Zoloft) and her memory deficits (difficulties with basic math, lack of awareness, inability to concentrate or focus).  Other than supplementing her therapies with additional speech therapy from a private therapist, is there a rehabilitation facility in the U.S. that can help her beyond what she got from Magee?  There are many facilities that help with drug or alcohol addiction.....are there similar places to help with memory rehabilitation?  I would love for my daughter to be able to reclaim her life!

I have had a number of strokes one with an effect of not being able to speak what I was thinking. I had a good speach thererapist and when I say words I learned to take my time to pronounce words slowly not try so hard that I would become stressed. Time will help and the understanding of loving parents help! God Bless and keep you!

I had a stroke in Apr 04.  I had weakness in left arm and leg.  After six weeks I was back to work and considered myself very lucky.

In Sep 06, I was having problems with memory and speech.  I left my job and tried to file for Social Security Disability.  I am 60 years old, I can not be retrained, or do I want to.  Nobody seems to believe that I have a memory problem,  My wife has not supported me at all, and my doctors are treating my case as a mental disorder.  I have lost everything.

Elsie, there certainly is other work that could help your daughter and given how young she is I think you should have her look at this website:  www.brainstrokes.com

It deals with a different type of rehab program that you could do at home with your daughter.  It doesn't address "memory" per se, but it addresses brain functioning, and even a stroke-injured brain can function much better if it's stimulated right.  Have your daughter check this site out and see if she becomes more hopeful.  My husband has profited greatly from Dr. Vasa's methods.
