mixed cognition after stroke

My husband had a hypertensive bleed May 10 and has been in the hospital since with multiple medical complications due to a horrid staph infection that got into his bloodstream. An internal shunt was put in a month ago and has helped alot with his cognition. He has retained his longterm memory including all the "bookwork" from school and has fair short term memory. He confuses his dreamworld with reality. His motor skills are poor; he is very ataxic (sp!) and must be assisted with everything as his movements are very impulsive. He is very depressed about his condition. They are going to release him from rehab in 10 days because he is not improving fast enough. Is there chance for improvement in his cognition? We can deal/live with the physical issues but he is so distraught over being, as he puts it, "stupid" after a lifetime of being literally at the genius level.

I finally was able to send some video files of my father to Rajul.  SHe thinks he has great potential.. so now my mom is looking for more help to help with the exercises.  Thanks for all your information on this program and I hope my dad and your husband benefit greatly from it.  Good luck and keep me posted...

How did they decide your husband's bleed was due to hypertension?  My husband had a bleed on May 28 but we were told it's impossible to know what caused it.  You might be interested in website www.brainstrokes.com
My husband has same dream-confusion and other things you describe.  He's profitting greatly from what we've learned from Dr. Vasa whose website I listed above.

He sounds so much like my dad... Most of the time he thinks he can walk and he will tell us that he just walked to the bathroom.  In his mind I guess he can walk.  But during the times when he realizes he needs help with everything, he gets very humiliated and depressed.  He came home from the hospital 3 weeks ago and has been doing a little better each day.  His mind seems to be getting better, but he has no rememberence of spending 5 months in several different hospitals.  We keep praying that someday he will at least be able to get himself to the bathroom and in and out of different chairs...  Right now he has to have help doing everything.  Good luck with your husband.  Are you bringing him home?
