Allergic to Tapezol

Hi!
Am newly diagnosed with Graves and have been on Tapezol for 3wks. Friday I became covered with hives and Endo said I needed to stop altogether and have RAI done immediately.
I am nervous about doing this mainly because it kills the thyroid and what if I am allergic to synthroid or any other of the thyroid meds.
Does anyone know of a way to strengthen the autoimmune system ..I will try anything to stay on the tapozol....
  I am so upset........thanks.

Hi! Shari,
well turned out allergic reaction was tapozole.:(. The hives weren't only sign, my belly bloated like I was six months pregnant! Blood tests showed some abnormal liver signs so I am now going for RAI on Monday. It upsets me but I do hope I will begin to feel better. It is now 7 days since last dosage of Tap and I am still getting hives here and there every day.
I am confused as to how this Iodine acts..radiologist said it will either go Hyper again, even out or go Hypo...iI thought it just destroyed it.. but after being off med I have energy and stamina..imagine that. Is it possible thyroid can corrrect itself or at least reverse to normal for a while?
Also thank you so much for your help, you are an angel.

How can she make such a quick decision?  VERY EASILY!  My first Endo, after two blood tests and NO MEDS told me she wanted to Ablate my Thyroid.  She also told me she was "going on vacation in two weeks and wants it done before then".  I was floored.  Mind you, I had NO symptoms of Hyper, except for the blood tests.  This was only discovered because I went for my Annual Physical, and my TSH came back low.  I had a normal RAI Iodine Uptake Scan.  I was blown away at the thought of destroying my Thyroid when I felt completely fine.  My Second Endo saw I had no symptoms, other than the blood tests, and immediately prescribed the PTU (was going to prescribe TAP until I told her even though I'm 40-something, I am only married over a year and still wanted to try to have a baby).  It's working, and if there comes a day that it doesn't, I will cross that bridge at the appropriate time.  Which is NOT NOW!!!!

Great Luck, and keep us posted!!

Sincerely,

Shari

Thank you! just read bottle and it is Intense Repair and Hydrating conditioner for dry and damaged hair. Thought it might help with brittleness.
I hope this is the problem....so I can stay on Tapozole...but then I wonder..how could she make such a quick decision without blood work to see if meds were working...just hand me a script for RAI.....hummmmmm

"Some report hives to hair conditioners that may be used by Woman with long hair. These hair products, termed protein hydrolysates, are used to repair hair. These products have ingredients such as collagen, keratin, elastin, milk, and wheat, almond or silk. Hair sprays that include methyldibromo glutaronitrile may cause hives.  Hives due to permanent waving have been noted rarely. If one of these products causes hives then contact with the product should be avoided".

It's TOTALLY possible!

I'm not a doctor, BUT.....  If you broke out using the conditioner, stopped the Tap, used the conditioner and broke out again, then it's a definite possibility!!  Read the ingredients on the conditoner bottle.  Maybe their is something in it that caused the break-out?  If you can, post the ingredients!  Can you imagine???

I'm here!

Not from what I have learned/heard/read.  Allergic to one, not allergic to another.  That's why people who cannot toletate one try the other one!  PTU is what they give pregnant woman, or woman trying to conceive, or people who don't fair well on Tap.  I am on PTU and doing fine.  My best friend was allergic to Tap, and was put on PTU.  They have different ingredients.  I'm on PTU for 7 weeks today.  Maybe you can ask your Primary Care Physician the same question.  Are they the same?  If not, maybe you can get another opinion from another Endo.  My first Endo said "NO" to ANY meds, and wanted to do RAI Ablation.  If I did not find this forum, my Thyroid would have been ablated prematurely, and you can't "un-do" it.  After my first blood test on the PTU, my levels improved.  I'm sure others will give their opinions as well.  Good luck, and feel free to message me with any questions!

Hi Ellie!

Have you tried the other anti-thyroid medication, "PTU"?  Some people who can't tolerate Tap CAN tolerate PTU.  It's worth a try.

Sincerely,

Shari
