TSH - 3rd Generation Test

I am pre-menopausal and could very well be post menopausal.  I had a TSH 3rd Generation test and I am out of the normal range of .40-4.50.  My result is 4.84.  What does this mean?

post your visit information. It would be worrisome if you are being based hypothyroid on a TSH test

let alone a junk TSH 3rd gen test.. ARGH!!!

They will not speak to me over the phone.  I have an appointment tomorrow for a conference, but I want to be prepared.  I do not have any symptoms that are listed, other than weight gain (a few pounds).  I have a feeling they will want to put me on meds right away without further investigation, which I am not comfortable with, as I hear that once you are on them, you are on them for life.

I will ask about the FT3 and FT4 and antibodies as you suggest. Thanks.

Hi,

it means you are hypothyroid.  What did the doctors say?

They should test FT3 and FT4 now to see what these levels are, and ideally they'll also test antibodies.

Did they recommend you start on thyroid meds?

Do you have any hypo symptoms?
