I had headaches when I first added T3 meds. You might want to stick it out. I guess it just depends how bad the headache is.
I took 1/4 a 5 mg cytomel today and ended up with the worst headache
I was originally on synthroid only. I slowly added cytomel while reducing synthroid and then eventually switched to armour. I was always really sensitive when adding T3 med, and would have a few days of feeling worse before feeling better. Try 2.5mg twice a day for awhile and see how you feel. After 4-6weeks it may be time to decrease T4 again and increase your T3. Since you already lowered you t4, you may not need to lower it at this point.
so i dropped to 300 mcg t4 from 330. I have these massive hangover headaches now. maybe i should try adding some t3 in. My doctor gave me some to try but i didnt do it. how did you do yours? these are 5 mg pills. please elaborate.
I had High RT3 and have felt better since lowing my T4 meds and adding more T3 meds. My RT3/FT3 ratio is still not 20, but I feel so much better. I've dropped weight, have more energy, and anxiety is gone. Maybe you should try lowering your T4 med and adding a low dose cytomel and see how you feel.
Here are my results from from the first time I had my RT3 tested and my last labs.
4/11/12- felt awful here.
Free T3 3.2 (2.3-4.2)
RT3 34 (11-32)
FT4 1.2 (.8-1.8)
TSH .02 (.4-4.5)
1/15/13
FreeT3 - 3.5 (2.3-4.2)
Reverse T3 - 25 (11-32)
FreeT4 - 1.2 (.8-1.8)
TSH- .01
I just finally saw a doctor that knows how to deal with high RT3 today, I haven't gotten into the treatment yet but I will share any info I get with you. My frees are high in range yet I feel hypo with weight gain. He did say it will be treated with T3 but I think they will look into my adrenal function, hormones etc. and get my whole system straight as well. I will pm you when I get more info. Hang in.
i picked you as the best answer. Thank you for not flaming me. I dropped from 330 to 300 because of the rt3 (at the direction of my dr.) to see if maybe that helps. I still have the weird headachy flu-like feeling + ear ringing which i guess is now the new norm for me. Man i miss the days of feeling normal.
Depends on who you talk to Bruce! Been reading a lot about it lately...you know the drill, post those new numbers-folks will want to know the ft3 to rt3 ratio, which is important.
1) convert it into T3 or
2) convert it into RT3.
Your body may be thinking it has sufficient T3 so it has decided to convert the excess T4 into RT3 to get rid of it and also inhibit the T3 receptors and thus bring itself back into balance.
Now then, there is the distinct possibility with all your history of problems that this sensing unit in your body is NOT functioning properly.
I was sort of surprised with the large doses of T4 you were taking that this wasn't going to happen. This is why I was opposed to I think your last inquiry about upping your T4 dose again a little bit. Many were opposed to it but I think you came to the conclusion that you needed to up it. And I'm not blaming you. You've dealt with this for a long time and were feeling better as you rose your T4 dosage so you wanted that to continue. But that last little bit may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
So the only answer I know of to reduce the amount of T4 available in your blood to convert. And if you are still Hypo at the cellular level, you will need to take some T3 to give your body what it needs.
And I know the first thing you are thinking is "here we go again".
Unfortunately I agree with that sentiment. But I'm not sure there is a way out of it.
I think the key is to go slow which I know is something that is extremely hard to do.
