Big fat thyroid dump?

Hey, all. Usually, I'm answering questions here, but I need your advice. For the past five months my body has been improving on the medication. This past week, my thyroid has swollen to the point where it is difficult to breathe. Now the swelling is going down some, but I feel lousy.

Temp 96.6 down from the low 97s
Feet so cold they ache
increased napping and fatigue
Blood pressure down
Dizzy and brain fog
Leg cramps back
Nauseous and feeling like I have the flu but no vomiting
Laxative dependent
Dry eyes and skin
Crying about stupid little things

I am thinking that the antibodies enjoyed a large helping of thyroid for their Christmas feast. Even though I'm not scheduled to see my endo until March 1, I'm thinking of calling him and requesting a bump. What are your  thoughts? No recent bloodwork. I'm currently on 112 Synthroid. I am getting plenty of vitamin D.

Susan, a thyroid dump is when the antibodies eat off a big chunk of your thyroid and your TSH soars and the frees drop. You go hypo again and need another thyroid med bump. You get the awful choking and swelling along with the drop in blood pressure, etc.

Get to your endo if this happens and get your meds increased. I'm lucky that my endo is very liberal in his method of treatment, and he allows me to bump myself if I feel my body going hypo.

You're right. My thyroid levels dropped big time. I just got back from a miserable vacation surviving on Tylenol III and long naps while hubby took on most of the duty with little one in the indoor waterpark.

I had upped my Synthroid from 112 to 125 and hardly feel better. I think I need another bump. I've got an appointment with the endo this Tuesday, but I'm not waiting to bump. I will try 137 tomorrow. He's very understanding when I do my own bumps.

My blood pressure dropped so low, I was very close to fainting and I had to sit down most of the time. I feel faint right now. My feet are cold and tingling and my legs ache big time. The swelling has been horrible. Maybe if I"m lucky, this thyroid will be dead within the week. Hopefully.

Are you sure your levels havent dropped dramatically and that you aren't pretty much MORE Hypo.
Sounds to me like your thyroid is needing more meds as levels have dropped.
TSH can do so many stupid things at the drop of a hat and so too can the FT3......I tend to think yours has done this.
Reason? No-one ever knows unfortunately.
Food for thought......

Hello!
I have been nreading this thread and I have a question...what is a Thyroid dump??  I have been hypo for 30 years.  I had a goiter when I was 18 and they gave me radioactive iodine...id din't understand all that then.  I have been on meds ver since.  Last year I have had such bad swings in TSH levels.  heart palps got real bad.  Long story short I FINALLY got to see an endo.  He said the right side of my thyroid is thin and scarred.  left side is enlarged and has a small single nodule.  He did say it was possible the nodule was actually a pocket of Thyroiditis...  He wants me to continue on present meds and come back in March for another ultrasound.  He wondered if I had ever been diagnosed with Hashimoto's or Thyroiditis.  Been feeling pressure on the left side of my throat down low, it also looks different on that side.  Thought I was feeling better but since last week I have the pressure again, headaches (which I never get), going from freezing to boiling....(had hystorectomy 12 years ago so it is not that!!  lol).   Where do I go form here?  Is this just going to be the way it is forever?  Blood tests and ultrasounds?  I know there are much worse things believe me.  I just wonder why things where fine for all these years and what is my Thyroid trying to tell me??  Thanks!!

Sounds just like what I go through all the time. My thyroid swells and makes it hard to breathe...................also get this way when my thyroid is taking another dump again as well.
My breathing issues are always from my thyroid now, and seldomly from my asthmas history. STrange it is!
Usually if I am having labored breathing, an increase in meds helps. Also make sure you are converting enough to.....low normal T3 is WAY too low for me and causes breathing issues.
I use ice packs on my thyroid all the time and take Tylenol Arthritis when it is at its worse......people with asthma history should not take ibuprofen or aspirin.
I hope you get to feeling better soon.  Ice it every couple of hours and make sure the inflammation is down in the thyroid gland itself....this will help.   :)

I really feel for you. Going through this is bad enough without it coming RIGHT when you want to be full of beans for a family vacation. GRRR.
I hope the extra meds do the trick and you're able to have a great time.

Thanks everyone for letting me rant. Here's what I did this morning. I upped my Synthroid to 125 from 112. I am feeling stronger and no so sluggish. My brain fog is less hazy. The tingling in my feet is warmer now, not so icy.

I will call my endo this afternoon and let him know what happened. We are getting ready to leave for vacation, otherwise, I'd be in his office. Actually, he practices in another town on Mondays. He's understanding when I up my meds as long as I tell him.

My last ultrasound in November showed that my thyroid is Swiss cheese. Maybe after the antibodies punch a few more holes, this will be over for all of us.

Selenium once a day and Motrin as needed help with swelling. Unfortunately, they haven't worked much for me this week.

How do we know when the gland has actually been killed off by the Hashi buggers? would it be buy scan?

This would be an excellent question for Laura1967 - she has these periodically.

Hashimoto is so evil... you can never predict those buggers and when they strike.

The can "counter act" the medication and things can be going along just as sweet as pie - then BAM - they rage and the meds dump you in hyper mode... Then they rear up and fight the meds so the meds don't work sometimes.

Poor doctors treating Hashi patients.. they too just never know what's going to happen so increases and decreases of medication is very common with this disease.

Sassy things I say... just never stable until they kill off that gland from functioning.

Hi Tamra.
I feel like i have had a big thyroid dump too like yours, but im puzzled as to why,
I had my second thyroid surgery in july, for graves, but they left me a piece of thyroid in as my surgeon could only find one parathyroid gland,
They said i would need thyroxine, which ive been taking 50mg,
Then 5 days ago bang, im very hyper ,sweating, palps, insomnia, eyes burning,
but my liver feels like its on fire, and my skin feels sensitive.
I was wondering if its the anti-bodies? and a mighty big rush off them?
Ive stopped the thyroxine.
I wonder if there is anything you could take to calm down the anti-body connection,if there was i would buy loads,
Thyroid issues are c**p, my gp just fobs me off all the time, i would love to give him a dose off this for a week.

I think your breathing difficulties are your thyroid pressing on the trachea, as mine used to do that, and cause me short of breath, maybe when it swelled up.
I now i havent been much help, but your not alone, right now, i hope you get better real soon.
Take care
Nicola

Nope. Not pregnant. Hubby had the snip after my miserable pregnancy and delivery.

Holy Buckets!!! You mean there is a bigger dump on the way? I don't know if I can handle any bigger. I almost feel like I'm back at square one and my frees have bottomed out again.

And the worst is that we are going on vacation tomorrow to an indoor waterpark where it will be snowing outside. I hate to disappoint the little one and cancel the trip.

I went to my GP last week because I am having difficulty breathing. She increased my Advair and took a chest XRay. She said she'd call if it looked like I had congestion in my chest, but I'm not hacking up anything like an asthma attack. It feels like my thyroid has swollen and is pressing against my windpipe.

I honestly wonder why doctors now hesitate to remove Hashi thyroids. This seems like a whole lot of suffering while we wait for these thyroids to die, but I'm a big baby, I guess. I've been a miserable crying mess all day. Thanks for letting me rant.

Blah!

Sure you are not pregnant! LOL! Just kidding!

You may well be having a thyroid dump and often there are a few episodes like that before the 'big one'. I remember my mother going through similar.

Probably a safe bet to call and mention what happened and I am sure you will get in much sooner.

If it gets any worse DO NOT hesitate to go to ER!
