Thyroid hormone is required for your body to function. After a total thyroidectomy, your only source for thyroid hormone is the medication. So you absolutely have to take replacement thyroid medication. To assure that you are getting enough thyroid medication you need to test for the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T4 and Free T3. Note that those are not the same as Total T4 and Total T3. So make sure they test for Free T4 and Free T3 each time you go in for tests.
To feel best, we have found that Free T4 needs to be around the middle of its reference range shown on the lab report. Free T3 needs to be in the upper half of its range. Also, hypothyroid patients like you have become since the total thyroidectomy are frequently deficient in Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin. So you also need to get those tested and then supplement as needed to optimize. D should be at least 50 ng/mL, B12 in the upper end of its reference range, and ferritin should be at least 100.
Do you think you can get all this done for yourself?
