I don't know why you get them, but I know how to get rid of them. I get them when I get an upset stomach. You get a tingle before they arrive. Take a valtrex (if the doctor approves). It will never appear.
You should check to see if you have the Epstein Barr virus (EBV) as it can cause these.
Thank you all for your answers...they are incredibly insightful. I'm going to try & keep track of these buggers a little better and see if maybe it's something I'm consuming or if it pops up again.
I'm also going to my doctor in a few weeks and will mention it to her...though she doesn't often make connections so well. *sigh*
Here's to hoping!
Another possible cause could be allergies...which is also an autoimmune disease. As has been mentioned, Hashis is autoimmune and puts you at a higher risk of having another autoimmune disease.
I used to get quite frequent out breaks of cancer sores, which I chalked up to other causes. In the process of treating my environmental allergies (mainly nasal symptoms), we discovered that three specific allergies were contributing to my cancer sores:
• Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (the chemical that makes toothpaste foam, which is found in almost every toothpaste in the US with one or two exceptions—Biotene being one.)
• Food allergy to Citric Acid
• Food allergy to Corn
The combination of causes made controlling the outbreaks much harder because it was hard to determine what was triggering it. Now, the only time I get canker sores is when I accidently get too much corn or citric acid in my diet.
hashi is autoimmune and I read somewhere that there is another autoimmune (not dealing with thyroid specifically) that attacks the mucosa (inner mouth). One autimmune disease can bring on others. Does that make sense?
I just looked and found the names of two: Sjogren's and Behcet's Syndromes. There is a link with pictures: http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin/md/autoimmune.html
Hope this helps!
Canker sores usually indicate a compromised immune system or that your body is fighting a viral infection. I tend to get them either before (or instead of) a cold or when my body is run down. All the supplements you mentioned are immune strengtheners, so I wouldn't think they are the culprits, but rather your body needing a break and some extra TLC.
Oops... and I'm hypo/hashi's... (though it may have been slightly evident by the euthyrox!). Sorry!
