Complete TT

Now that I had my complete thyroid removed due to thyroid cancer, is it inevitable that I am going to gain weight?

I had the same concern but so far so good...knock wood.  I was 112 when I weighed in for my surgery on March 12 and am 108 now.  I would not mind going back to 112 but I'm sure it will happen with time.  I am on 100mcg of synthroid and feel great.  The only differences I see from the pre surgery me is taking a pill everyday and my scar - :)  Good Luck to you.....

I had a TT in dec 06 and went from 187 to 172 in a couple of weeks on my LID waiting for my RAI.I am currently on 162mcg of levo and have maintained my weight at 172..I also work out(run, bike and lift weights)everyday and watch my calories very carefully..I eat alot of friut and vegetables, salmon, tuna and alot of oatmeal nuts and berries..ive basically cut out all refined sugar and red meat from my diet....occasionaly ill have some pizza or whole wheat pasta but the adjustments ive made after my TT seem to be working for me....it sure is a rollercoaster ride for us thyroid people!!!

I gained 30 lbs. in the last 18 minths due to all the thyroid problems...My TT was on 2/14, and I've pretty much stayed the same...trying to get rid of it all now...Just started Weight Watchers on Saturday to see if that will help...Don't know if I can do it because I have hypoglycemia and have to eat every few hours...Oh, joy...

I don't think it's inevitable, but definitely something that requires full attention.  I have ALWAYS been a little person.  Between my TT and RAI, which was 1 month and 5 days, I gained 22 pounds.  After I got my levels adjusted I lost almost all of it.  Then I got pregnant and only gained 18 pounds and after my levels were way out of wack again and I was down to 12 pounds lighter than before I was pregnant.  I still am going back and forth almost monthly between 122-132 even with no dietary changes that would promote that.

It's all about getting the meds leveled correctly, exercise, and proper diet.  My sisters and I developed pre diabetes/diabetes after our thyroid surgeries and are on low-carb diets.  I'm currently at the weight I was at before surgery and two of my sisters have lost weight.  Be patient and stay on top of your thyroid and glucose levels.

It shouldn't be inevitable. If you can get your replacement hormone adjusted properly, you should be 'euthyroid' as opposed to either hyper or hypothyroid. Euthyroid is 'normal' and is what you and your doctor will be aiming for. In a state of euthryoid, you should just perk along, neither gaining nor losing weight out of hand. So far, knock on wood, I haven't gained weight since my TT February 19th. Maybe it's too soon for me to know what's going to happen, but so far, so good. What do you folks with longer experience say?
