Confused on Treatment

I am an 18 year old female and went off birth control in April 2008.  Since that time I have gained 17 pounds (although none of my eating or exercise habits have changed), have only had two menstrual cycles, increased fatigue and great amount of hair loss.  At my doctor exam they said my thyroid was in larged and order blood tests and an ultrasound.
There were 3 small cysts found on my thyroid and my TSH was 2.89.  Since I has been discovered that my mom has Hasimoto's my antibodies were tested.  They came back positive.  The problem is that my doctor feels that since my TSH level is not bad I should wait for treatment.  My mom disagrees and insists I see specialist.  What should I do and should I push for treatment.  The other doctor said if I go back on birth control it might straighten out my body but I don't want to stay on birth control forever.

Definately go with your mother {mother does know best} The birth control can mess things up and it does take awhile to get everything back in order, but the symptoms you are describing really do need to be check ouy by a speacilist. Good luck!

I agree with your mother and find another doctor that will help you out.

Actually being on birth control could have been the reason why you are having issues. For about two years I have been reading about the new YAZ product and how is disrupts thyroid function. It is also with other forms of birth control pills.

You are taking an estrogen hormone product which changes the cycle of the four glands that produce hormones.

The pitutary - thyroid - adrenals and sex horrmones/

I can't say being on thyroid medication will cure this - but you need someone who understand all the components before it falls out of whack

I suggest finding a bio identical hormone doctor - they usually are very knowledgeable in knowing the whole system and how to put it back together.
