Could this be Graves or viral thyroiditits?

Hello!
I am a 40 yr old woman and I went down with what I thought was a heavy cold in early march 2008. The sympoms were nasal congestion (although not quite as much as I expected), sore throat, myalgia, ear congestion, lethargy, barking cough (prominent symptom) and mild fever. I rested and had a couple of days off work and then returned. I felt much better for a few days but then all the symptoms returned. I was put on antibiotics - in the end I had courses of amoxycillin, ciprofloxacin, and then a month of doxycycline (GP was concerned I may have Lyme disease and test was not back yet).
Over the next 4 months I continued to have all these symptoms. I would feel well for a couple of days and then terrible again for about a week (sometimes having to take to my bed). Over the past month the cough and sore throat have subsided mostly. i still get occasional nasal congestion (with green discharge) but this seems to be improving. Throughout the illness I have had an intolerance of heat. I get sweaty, irritable and anxious when hot. I have also had a raised resting pulse (around 100) and on a few occasions a raised bp (about 166/100). My bowels have been looser than normal and I have had quite painful wrists for the last 2 months (no swelling).
I have met at least three people with identical symptoms to me for the last 6 to 9 months. They all started with a "cold" and they are all local.

My abnormal tests have been: slightly raised ESR throughout (27-35), adenovirus antibody up, alpha - 1- globulin slightly increased on electrophoresis (comment - could be acute phase of infection), IgA 2.98 , 2/9/08 serum free T4 20.7, serum free T3 7, serum TSH < 0.02. In April 2008, T4 14.2, TSH 0.22, T3 3.7. Echo showed mild pulmonary hypertension (could this be caused by hyperthyroidism?)
Of note in my family history ny mother has an autoimmune hypothyroidism. I am normally very well with no medical problems.
On examination I have small lymph nodes palpable in my anterior neck, a slightly red throat and a rapid pulse (104 at present). I recently have had a fine tremor. There is some question as to whether I have slight exophthalmos and lid lag (one dr thinks I do have, another that I don't).

I am now being considered for carbimazole. However, my concern is that I don't have Graves but that I have viral thyroiditis.
I wondered if you have any thoughts??
Thanks, Helen

Did your doctor test you for Epstein Barr virus (EBV)? This can cause the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and some of your symptoms match.
Anyway, I am not an expert but you can check the forums for EBV and the one for Fibromalgia/CFS, maybe you get some answers.
I do have EBV, Hashimoto and Hyperthyroid. In my case they are somehow related

Swollen lymph nodes and elevated ESR suggests the subacute thyroiditis.Early hyper stage. Blood test for ^TSI antibodies may confirm or rule out the Grave's disease.
