Diagnosed graves and ptu ?'s

I recently had my first appt with my endo dr and he had told me that I have graves disease and he put me on PTU.  I also take inderal.  And i was just wondering if anyone can give me any insight other than looking up info on the internet. Or just anything that might help.  I also have terribly itching, and burning skin.  I heard this is a side effect but is there anything i can use so its not so sensitive?   Any help regarding anything would really be appreciated!  thanks so much, michelle

How long have you been taking PTU?

If you are breaking out in hives and you have been on PTU a week or two you might ask to try Tapazole or Methimazole.

You need to have blood tests done every six weeks until your tst results show that you are maintaining a hormone level that satisfies your doctor and yourself.

I added "yourself", because you are going to have to learn to manage this disease yourself. Thyroid hormone blood tests are difficult to interpret, and you will have to "trust, but verify" what your doctor is telling you. Get copies of your bloodwork and work as a team with your doctor. Learn what is correct and monitor what your doctor is doing. Ask questions, make suggestions, participate in your treatment.

That sounds like a lot of work, but it is not all that bad. It just means that you will have to understand things well enough to know if your doctor starts leading you down a wrong path.

Because, some doctors are very good at understanding your problem, and some doctors are not.
