I realize this is two years after the original post, but for anyone who is researching online I wanted to comment. I developed thyroid swelling in the left side of my throat one day. At first I didnt think much of it, but it bothered me more and more. All day it felt like someone had their hand around my throat. It was awkward to swallow, but at the same time I had no problem swallowing. It was the pressure that bothrered me most. Another symptom I developed was that my jaw felt soar at the joints near my ears--- just uncomfortable like I'd been chewing gum all day (which I do not do) and they needed to be stretched or rested. The biggest clue I got was that my symptoms went away when I slept and I'd feel better in the morning. However, throughout the day the symptoms would come back.
I went to three doctors. The first had no idea and sent me to an ENT. The particular ENT I went to took tests and everything came back fine. He said I must have acid reflux, which I've NEVER had a problem with before. I considered how my thyroid was visibly swollen and determined to listen to my body and to feel that the ENT was wrong. Finally the third doctor was at a health clinic. He said "Ah! I think I know what it is!" He asked if I had very bad allergies with quite a bit of postnasal drip. I said yes. The third doctor determined that my sinuses were dripping down the back of my throat and giving a constant supply of viruses and bacteria (just commonly found in sinuses) to my throat. He predicted that some of these were making their way into my thyroid and I probably had a viral infection. He gave me Nasonex to stop the dripping and recommended that I rest and get plenty of liquids like with most illnesses. After three to four weeks my problem completely went away. I also came to find out that my friend's sister-in-law had the same exact problem a few months earlier. The other woman was given the same recommendations and recovered, even while pregnant.
I hope someone finds this helpful. May you feel better always!
