Doctor Won't Treat Thyroid

After seeing an Endocronologist on Tuesday, I left his office very perplexed. First, my levels came back as .01. He says this indicates hyperthyroidism. Looking at endocrineweb.com, I have 10 of 14 of the symptoms for hypothyroid and only a few of the hyperthyroid symptoms. Can you help me to understand why? Also, he said that if it appears my hyperthyroidism is due to postpartum, he will not treat it and I will have to "ride it out". Is this reasonable? This condition has affected my life so much that I am too tired to take care of my two children at night. During my work day I have to sneak off for an hour or so to nap. Not to mention I do 40 mins of cardio 3 times a week and eat a 1200 calorie a day diet with no weight loss! I am frustrated and feel very unhealthy. I want my life back. What can I do if he won't treat me?

I assume that the test you referred to was for TSH.  That would be consistent with the doctor saying you were hyper t.  With your many symptoms, and seemingly low metabolism, I am surprised if  the doctor has not done any further testing.  It sure sounds like that wold be in order.
For the next step, I would insist that further testing is needed for free T3 and free T4 (not total T3 and total T4), along with TSH.  This will give you a much more complete picture of your thyroid function.  In view of all your symptoms, If the doctor refuses to do this additional testing, then by all means, find yourself a good thyroid doctor.  In fact, based on your experience to date, I'd start the process of finding such a doctor anyway, because you are likely to need one.  If you are able to get the additional testing done, please always get a copy and post the numbers and ranges here for review and comment. Good luck.

Go to another Endo, but ask questions and explain your situation prior to an appointment, also ask what TSH standards they follow, if they go by .5 to 5.0, Keep looking. Good Luck FTB4
