Does Hashimoto's go away?

I am confused.  During a routine exam during which I said I hated taking pills, my Dr. said that I could stop taking synthroid for 6 weeks to see if I didnt need it anymore.  I have been on .25mg Synthroid for 10 years after testing positive for Hashimoto's antibody.  I stopped for 6 weeks, then they tested my TSH again. I just received a notice that my TSH levels are normal and I dont need to take Synthroid anymore.  Can Hashimoto's disappear?  Also, an MRI for neck problems discovered thryroid nodules last month which tested benign on one, typical due to Hashimoto's and indeterminate on the other.  Could too much synthroid for years have caused nodules?  If I have nodules typical for those with Hashimoto's how can I not need synthroid?

I can't answer your question about nodules showing up on at CT scan.  Mine showed up on an ultra sound. What thyroid tests have you had done?  You should ask for Free T3, Free T4, TSH, along with TPOab and TGab (which are antibody tests).  Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease and you will have positive antibodies if you have it.

Hi everyone,

I am not yet diagnosed with Hashimoto's, but have every symptom of it and have been ill for about 20 yrs with all symptoms of Hashi's and symptoms of a thyroid nodule, as well.
I would like to know what the steps are to find a thyroid nodule!
I had a CT scan done on my neck and nothing showed up...but I KNOW I have huge discomfort in my neck (thyroid area), on top of ALL the Hashi's symptoms.
Can a thyroid nodule be missed on a CAT scan??
If so, what is the right test that I should have done to check for a thyroid nodule?
Thank u so much!
KIMBERLY:)

Hashimoto's is not "cured" and does not go away.  It's possible to have Hashimoto's while still having normal TSH, etc.  Are they only going by TSH results?  They should be checking all thyroid levels (free T4, free T3, as well as TSH).  It would be good if you can post your test results.

I was told by my Endo that Hashi's is not curable, and does not go away, You might want to post your labs here, either you still have Hashimoto's or you did not have it to begin with.I doubt that it just goes away on its own. I would also advise a second opinion with an Endocrinologist that is experienced with thyroid problems, some are more experienced with diabetes and not so much with thyroid. Good Luck FTB4

I have hashimoto's and was only diagnosed because my antibodies were so high. My TSH was only 2.90 but I was developing a goiter in my neck and having hypothyroid symtoms. I was told that the reason I needed to be on meds even with a normal TSH was because the goiter could continue to get larger. I was told by my endo that I will need medication the rest of my life so it can keep the hypothyroid symptoms from returning. They say the nodules are caused by the hashimoto's and it's not uncommon to have these with this disease. I would get a second opinion because your TSH could always start changing months down the road with no medication helping your thryoid. I hope this helps.
