Dr. calls what I have a "Mass"

I am a 39 yo woman that went in for a routine BP check to monitor my BP meds and after complaining of some symptoms to my Dr., she felt my Thyroid and said she felt a nodule and would classify what she feels as a mass.  I went for an ultrasound and blood work but have not gotten the results yet.  Some of my symptoms include:  right side neck-ache (almost a dull throb at times and then its gone), hoarse voice at times, hard time clearing my throat, EXTREME fatigue and yet hard to fall asleep at times, bags under my eyes (people always comment on how tired I look), a feeling of achiness almost like I am getting a fever, and I feel foggy at times and irritable.  I just want to know what this could mean...Does the Thyroid swell if it is just a case of hypothyroidism?  or could it mean something more like cancer?  The thyroid is definitely swollen to the touch and aches.  Would it if it were just hypo?  Thank you for your help.

Most nodules do not cause problems with labs so, yeah, blood work can be normal and there can still be a problem.

No, most masses/nodules do not require surgery unless 1) they are toxic (producing too much hormone), 2) they are positive or suspicious for cancer, 3) they are so large they are compressing neck structures.

Check out that link I posted above.  It has some great info and pictures for reference.

Let us know what the US says.

Thx so much for the info.

After I wrote this, I got my Blood results and all the levels seem normal.  I am still waiting on the US results though.  Now, my question is....

1.  Can blood work be normal but there could still be a problem?  If so, what kind of things could it be?
2.  So most nodules and masses require surgery?

It seems to me that what the blood shows is that my thyroid is functioning normally but that maybe there is a cyst or tumor which is causing the nodule/swelling?

I am just going crazy!!!

The thyroid can swell from inflammation in the thyroid (thyroiditis), and autoimmune condition, or other reasons.  However, those conditions do not cause a nodule which is sometimes called a "mass" or "lesion".

Here's a great website that can give you additional information:  http://www.endocrineweb.com/thyroid.html

Let us know what the ultrasound and labs show.

Get feeling better
