So...I see you've been getting the same meticulous medical care that most of us have.
LOL!!
:o)
Eh, It's not funny, at all.
The TPOab antibodies could have started up anytime since the last time you were tested for them. Antibodies sprout when they want to. It sounds like you have had antibodies playing with your thyroid for a long time.
You should also get tested for TGab. Why? Im not sure. So you know if you have Thyroglobulin antibodies, I guess. You can't do anything about them, but if you have a really high count it would be good to know.
did having my thyroid removed cause this or is it the remaining thyroid lobe that did it?
I had my antibodies tested about 4 yrs ago when the nodules were first discovered.. and they were normal at that time but have never been tested since...it was about two years before I had the lobe removed by my mayo clinic endo, though he NEVER tested them either?? hmmm he is a quack.. the worst endo ever!
I also just had a baby 9 months ago and they only tested my tsh once during the whole pg! I never knew that they should of been tested more often.
Your treatment remains the same.
It would have been nice if the doctor would have tested you for antibodies a long time ago. For one thing, it would have given you a diagnosis rather than a generic catch-all term.
Hypothyroidism; that can be cause by several things. It's a description of a condition, but it is not a specific diagnosis. Hashimoto's is specific.
It also would have been less of a puzzle as to what was going on with your thyroid.
Most importantly, it would have given you a heads-up that you have an autoimmune condition. That is important to know. Once you develop an autoimmune condition, it is possible to develop others, like Rheumatoid Arthritis or any one of the many kinds.
It's not automatic that you will get other diseases, but if you have symptoms that come up later that are confusing the doctor will have a better idea of what tests to run if he/she knows you have an autoimmune disease.
It would not have changed the course of your treatment, because there is not much one can do about the antibodies, and your's are fairly low anyway.
So it hasn't harmed you to not have been tested sooner. But it was sloppy of someone to not have tested you long before surgery came up.
I had a partial thyroidectomy in 07 and have been on synthroid for almost 2 years. I also have 2 remaining nodules on my left remaining side.
I am glad to have some answers again! this has been along 2 yrs batteling to keep my thyroid in check! I did just increased my meds again , cause I knew I am not were I need to be!
I have not had a antobody test in 4 yrs is that bad. how much damage if caused if I have been on meds???
Now if I have hashimotos do I just continue on the synthroid? is that the only treatment?
Thanks for the imput!
Your TPOab came back positive, indicating an autoimmune thyroid condition. It is fairly low, if that is any consolation.
The definition of Hashimoto's is a TPOab test that is positive, and either a goiter, or low thyroid hormone levels requiring medication. It can get more complicated, but that is the definition used by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology.
If you are on a thyroid hormone replacement med (and have antibodies), you have Hashimoto's.
All of the above is stated with the assumption that you have a thyroid. If you had a thyroidectomy because of Grave's, that is a different story.
Your T3 tests look a little low to me.
SORRY my T4 (free) direct is 1.15
