Feeling Fat, Fuzzy & Frazzled

Has anyone read the Shames' book of the above title, recommended by Mary Shoman? I just breezed through it and am wondering if I should invest $200 in the recommended supplements, or if this is just another example of a doctor trying to relieve me of some of my money?

Yeah, I guess there is a fine balance with the thyroid and sex hormones.  When one is off it throws everything out of balance...quite frustrating!!

Feel free to vent away.  I am feed up with my doctors and my recent experiences are just fueling the fire.

As for House, I am still enjoying the old curmudgeon!!  I don't know about the whole House/Cuddy thing going on...the show needs the sexual tension not a relationship between them.  It is getting scary that I recognize so many of the autoimmune diseases they mention and hormone tests they order...geez, I wish House could be our doctor!!  Bet he could figure out why our hair is still falling out!

Let me know how it's going and if the proferrin gets your ferritin up.

I was doing better with hair loss, but it's back... It feels like I'm intaking more vitamins than food these days. It's getting complicated trying to work them all around each other. No calcium or iron near Synthroid, no calcium near iron, nothing near Protonix, and can't even drink water 3 hours before bed (reflux).

The endo did a complete work up in June, estrogen, cortisol, etc. Everything came back in the normal range. According the questionnaire in the Shames book, I actually have high Estrogen, but it also said if thyroid is whacky, can mess up the balance of the other hormones. So I'm going to try 3 of the supplements for thyroid--actually they are basic for all hormonal imbalances--and see if that helps. I go back to my endo in January, and I will ask for saliva tests this time. I also need to get him to clarify why he wants to keep my TSH under 1. I thought under 1 was only for cancer suppression. I have hashi's, no goiter, no cancer. I'm thinking I'd feel better around 1.5-2.

Then if all that doesn't work, I'm going to find a better primary care. My original one left when she had her baby, and the replacement told me "not to shampoo my hair so much" when I brought up the hair loss, even though it was she who found the low ferritin problem!!!

Right now I'm disgusted with all medical professionals. My gyno used to be my gold standard for doctors, and he just smirked at me at my last visit because he thinks my issues are just aging. Aging is a gradual process, not something that happens like a light switch, and his answer was 10 days of progesterone. When I asked him about vitamins/supplements, he said a Centrum Silver and calcium and that was all I needed. So I stopped taking my heme iron pills and consequently stopped getting my period. After 2 months I went back on the iron, and bam, there came the period. (The progesterone did nothing but make me fat.) So 2 weeks ago I went back for a follow up appt, itching to give him a piece of my mind, and after sitting in his waiting room for 1.5 hours, I got up and left. No one ever called to apologize for making me wait or reschedule another appt. I am SO ALL DONE with doctors.

Sorry. More venting. But this is so darn frustrating!!!!!

What do you think of the new season of House? Definitely taking some bizarre twists. Wonder if they're running out of medical situations so jacking up the personality stuff? Could be the last season...

Remember me?  A fellow House fan and hair loss victim!!

I am still dealing with the hair falling out as well.  It has been over a year on Synthroid and iron pills...I even broke down and did the whole proferrin thing for two months but still my ferritin didn't budge.  Very frustrating!
I am starting to investigate low estrogen (i'm 31) since I haven't had a cycle since April and failed to induce a period with Progesterone withdrawal test.  Have you had your female hormones checked lately?

There has got to be a better Endo in Boston at least some that will prescribe cytomel and consider other options!!  I am driving two hours to see a Repro endo every two months because my regular endo is horrible and can't or doesn't want to help or listen to me.

I was sure hoping you would be having better luck with the hair loss because I hadn't seen you post in awhile.

Talk to you later!  Stay warm up there!!

I do believe the information in the book. I do think my blood tests are "normal" but hormones aren't making it to the cellular level. I'm scientific just enough to understand that concept. My endo doesn't think there is any difference between Synthroid and Levoxyl, and he is unwilling to prescribe Cytomel, at least to me, so I've been researching like mad to figure out why I'm still losing hair, gaining weight around the mid section only, and so fatigued by 3 p.m. My adrenals all checked out fine, as did B12. I tend to be anemic, but take 2-3 iron pills/day, plus I got special iron pills from a lab in Colorado that are for people who take PPIs because iron needs stomach acid to be absorbed, and of course the PPI decreases acid.

I can't change endos. I live on Cape Cod and there are only 2 on the Cape and the other isn't accepting new patients. My friend has Graves and is making the hour/hour 1/2 trip (one way) to Boston to her doctor for a 15-minute appointment and no more satisfaction than I'm getting.

I guess my main question is whether or not the supplements the book suggests really do have more potency (?) than the ones you can buy at the health food store or grocery store, or if those supplement companies just helped sponsor the Shames to write the book. The whole supplement thing is so crazy since the FDA doesn't regulate it. We could literally be buying a pig in a poke (no Armour pun intended!!) LOL

This is long. Sorry. I just needed to vent.

I have read portions of the book and it is a different way of looking at thyroid problem. The Shame's are very Armour friendly and have some methods that some doctors do not think are of the norm.

It has worked for many people on Armour - but some it may not.

I value their information - but I haven't gone completely with the program myself.
