First Time Seeing an Endo

I used diagnosed 5 months ago with the "Hypo" as I lovingly refer to it and it's been 5 months of hell.  I've been through 2 dr's and on several different doses of Synthroid - oh-- and one trip to the ER.  I had a drug interaction my first week with my Zoloft.  So, no SSRI for me.

I just recently switched to Armour in hopes of having less of side effects.  Especially the anxiety and agitation which by the way I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder which I already take medication for.  I had read and researched and am hoping for a better result on the Armour but I know the Endo will probably want to put me back on the Synthroid as I have read they are against using Armour for treatment.

My question is - what to expect.  What to ask.  I have already been through a ton of tests and everything is "normal" except that my TSH is going up again.  I was down to 6.8 on July 4th and as of 8 days ago I was back up to 10.24.

I am so frustrated!!!  I take my medication like clockwork and my regular dr. says, let's just up the dosage and I think "great here comes the hell".  My body just hates the Synthroid.

I am "self pay" so I am nervous because of the cost involved and don't just want them running tons of unnecessary tests.

Any advice?

Try switching to Levoxyl if the Armour does not work for you.

If you have GAD, the T3 in armour may enhance your anxiety. Or you could try splitting the Armour dose and take half in the morning and half in the afternoon.

You might also inquire about Alprazolam to help with anxiety. It will not interact with thyroid medications in a negative manner.

When it comes to running tests on your thyroid, ask for Free T4 and Free T3 tests. Along with a TSH test, they are the ones you want run. You can get by with just a TSH most of the time if you have to, but once in a while you need to check your Free T4 and Free T3, especialy if you are on Armour.
