Should I see an Endocrinologist?

Thyroid disease runs on both sides of my family. My mother has been diagnosed with Hypothyroid some time ago. My symptoms started a little over a year ago and they did not come all at once. Initially my ankles and lower legs (below the knee) would swell. I went in for an ultrasound of my legs and no blood clots so my doctor said I could be retaining water and should drink more water. I have been feeling very tired and its has been getting worse as time goes on.  It's to the point where I can sleep all day and still feel like a nap. I always feel cold especially my hands and feet.  I have been feeling down and out for no reason.  I have been very moody.  Within the last 4 months I have slowly began gaining a little weight with no change in diet or excercise and my face has been very dry.

I recently went to my family doctor and he tested my TSH and T4 Free. My T4 results = .90 and my TSH results = 3.45. The nurse called and advised me that my levels are normal. I have read many articles about thyroid tests and the debate over "normal" reference ranges. Since there's the history of thyroid issues in my family and the sypmtoms I listed above, should I get a second option from an Endocrinologist specialist? I just really want to get back to normal.

I agree Stella. Is there any other kind of doctors besides GP's and Endo"s who know about thyroid? Just curious! I might end up needing one! Lol. I just said endo because that is "supposed" to be their field. Point being...see someone!

See someone who is thyroid knowlegdable... that's a myth that endo's are the only ones that are thyroid smart.

Absolutely, you should see an endocrinologist! Just given your family history and your symptoms..it definately can't hurt. General Practioners are just that...unless you are lucky enough to find one that really knows his stuff. I personally, would see a specialist. Good Luck!.........Lynda xo.
