Hair Loss & Hashi's - anybody had success with meds?

Hi,  I have recently been diagnosed with Hashi's after 20 years of banging my head against brick walls with clueless dr's.  My gut instinct (& obvious symptoms) always told me I had some sort of thyroid problem but, as lots of us know, the ol' TSH was in range so it was never diagnosed. Even though my TPO antibodies are 200 (<20) along with glaringly obvious symptoms these were not enough to set alarm bells ringing *SIGH*..... Also dx with the other usual's, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Anxiety....*SIGH*

I suffer from all of the usual symptoms. I have been through the hyper stage and have settled into hypo for the past few years. Thankfully my latest GP (had too many to mention) has stuck with me and I have also been fortunate enough to find a different Endo who looks at the whole picture and not just TSH. I started on Oroxine (synthetic T4 med in Australia) 2 months ago and will be commencing T3 meds in  a few weeks. I have also discussed natural thyroid replacement and he is "not in favour" but willing to discuss it if I decide to go down that path. *Miricle*!!

I am wondering if any other's with Hashi's also suffered from loss and thinning of head hair, eyebrows and eyelashes? Has anybody had success with regrowing after taking thyroid meds? Any opinions on synthetic v's natural as far as hair regrowth is concerned?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to offer.

Hi Nat,

Yup, Debs mentioned you as a fellow Aussie member. She is such a lovely lady and its nice to meet you too :) Where abouts in Oz are you? I'm on the Gold Coast.

Over the past few days I have noticed less hair fall "YAY" so maybe the meds are starting to kick in or maybe wishful thinking but I am very hopeful.

Hope you are doing well.

I used to hate the plucking too, but now that I've seen how thin and yuck they can be...I don't mind so much anymore!  Now I've noticed when I start to go more hypo my hair is one of the first signs I get...so I keep close attention to my hair now!!

Nothing is ever simple with thyroid, you're right there!!  It's all one big test lol.

Ah so you've heard of me lol...that's nice!

Hi Nat,

Thanks for responding. Very glad to hear you have had some success with your eyebrows and hair, that is encouraging :)  I used to hate plucking my eyebrows now I would be sooo happy to have that chore again lol.

I am only just starting with meds so going through the 'wait and see' how this dosage goes and then T3 later. Honestly, is there anything simple when it comes to thyroid disorders?? Getting the meds and doses right seems like as big a problem as getting the diagnosis! However, I am very happy to have a diagnosis and  medications to try so I will stop complaining now.

Thanks again for your reply Nat, glad to hear you are doing well. I think another Aussie member "Debs" mentioned you to me when I was chatting with her a while ago.  What a nice lady she is :)

Hey!
I was quite hypo for a while after surgery and RAI before the levels picked up a bit. I'm still hypo, but not as bad...and I've noticed, my eyebrows did thin and my hair got super dry and gross looking...but since the thyroid meds have made the levels rise a bit the eyebrows have regrew like they used to be (I have noticed I'm waxing/plucking them more recently) and my hair has got some better. Still a little dry but it's getting there!

As for meds, I'm on synthetic (eutroxsig - another synethetic Australian T4!).  I don't have experience with the natural meds or T3 because my blood results have always shown the FT3 is always around where it should be with the FT4 (If FT4 is low, FT3 is low...but the times FT4 was ok, the FT3 has also been ok)...doesn't look like I need the T3 meds...yet!

Good luck!!

Thanks gimel, my first post topic was spelt incorrectly. "Hail Loss instead of Hair loss" so I reposted.
