I can't talk!

I had a thyroidectomy on Tuesday and I still have no voice!  My doctor is very concerned because he has never had this happen before.  He is sure he did not cut the nerves but said my vocal cords are not moving! Did this happen to anyone else after throidectomy?  Also I can't swallow thin liquids, I choke and cough.  The swallowing nerves are higher up but the doctor said my thyroid was up pretty high and those nerves could have been stretched too.  He hopes in time they will work again and put me on prednisone to help the inflammation.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I am very worried!!!

My surgeon is an ENT and he does these surgeries every week.  I think the swallowing issue is bothering him too.  I think he just doesn't want me to have any serious complications so he is extra worried.  Today is slightly better, I just have to learn to be patient and REST.  That is very hard for me.  I am usually doing 3 things at once!

I hope you are feeling OK other than that.  Having a thyroidectomy can cause hoarseness or  vocal nerve paralyzation, most of the time it is temporary, sometimes not.  A lot of people loose their voice for a number of weeks, so you must be patient.  Do not loose hope.  A lot of people also get it back all at once, kind of overnight.  It concerns me, though, that the doctor has not heard of it.  What kind of doctor is he?  How many surgeries has he done?

No drain needed. The incision looks great and I feel good except not being able to talk or swallow thin liquids.  Maybe it was from the breathing tube during surgery.  I guess I am not a very patient, patient. I like being the nurse better, LOL!

the cords may be stressed as you and your doctor talked about - its been two days and your early in the stage after surgery.

Its easier said than done - but hang in there.. watch the opening for any liquid coming out and take it easier. Do not stress your voice box to talk rught now - you should relax.

Are you tubed right now? That could be something that needs to be fixed or removed too.
