Help with losing weight

Hi
Is there really any help out there with this. I'm a 54 year old femail with the menopause, if thats not bad enough, I now have an under active thyroid. I am virtually straving myself exercising, and  taking libo bind slimming tablets yet getting fatter everyday, needless to say my clothes are tighter and uncomfortable, and yet my GP seems to think it's ok that I have put on weight because my BMI is ok. Other than that she just ignores me. Just wondering say for example I had a bad heart and I urgently needed to lose weight, would my doctor then help or would she just continue to ignore me, because quite frankly evey time I go to my group practice all three doctors don't seem to reconize the words menopause or underactive thyroid. If i don't lose weight soon I will explode. Can ayone help.

I found these two books to be very helpful both are written by Mary J Shomon.  The Thyroid Diet and Living Well with Hypothyroidism.  They are written by someone living with hypothyroid disease.

Thanks for your reply. It has not been confirmed that I have underactive thyroid, I figured it out for myself, because my doctors are ignoring my increased weight, trying to get information from them is like trying to get blood out of a stone. Initially I went to see them 2 years ago regarding the menopause. I did'nt know you put on weight with meno until I looked it up. I pointed out to my GP that I was putting on weight, especially around my back, which I never had before, she just said well when you put on weight during the menopause, it distributes in different areas, and just left it at that. Since my doctors are reluctant to assist me I have turned to the internet to get all the info I need. I recently went to see a specialist at the gynae clinic she just said since you have put on weight, its the meno, and you just have to put up with it. I have had 2 thyroid blood tests but they are negative. I know from research that it does not always show up and that there several different types of tests you can take. The only way I am going to know for sure is to have the blood tests done privately. I notice many of you are from the U.S.A. I am from the UK, so I think the doctors are a bit ignorant on thyroid matters over here.

have you just been diagnosed with thyroid trouble i put on a load of weight when i first got it, once i was diagnosed and started med the weight loss slowed and once i was on the right dose for a while it stopped but i have never managed to lose it. i havent found many that have lost the weight some have lost a bit with a lot of hard work once there meds are ok, but many of us struggle. you need to get the meds sorted but i dont think theres a pill you can get from the doctor for weight. you could try supplement as people with thyroid problems are usually low in a range of minerals and vitamins
good luck
