High T3

Dear Dr. My name is Jessie. I'm a medical study. My mum have a hypothyroidism sine 2005. Doctor ask her to take levothyroxcine and repeat the test every 3month. She has taken this medicine for 3years. 100mg per day. 3months ago her when i took her to have the blood test. T3 and T4 are normal. But her TSH is very low. And the Doctor said still keep continue the same dose. When I repeat the test on 10 April 2008. The result show T3 are high. 5,76pmol/l ( N: 2,22-5,32). Could you tell me more about my mum condition? If T3 is still high what will happen with her?
Thank in advance.
Doctor Mark

Jessie,
Your mom needs to be on a name brand, not generic thyroid medication. If she gets medicine from different manufacturers, she might metabolize (digest) them differently. Her lab results will then vary greatly & the doctor will not know what to do. In USA, the pharmacy does not tell a person when the manufacturer changes, so that is a problem here. The TSH should be under 2.0 but should not be low, especially if the Free T3 or free T4 are high. That could cause osteoporosis or cardiac (heart) problems.
