How do kidney problems affect the Thyroid?

My friends mother is having, and has been having severe kidney problems for the past few years. She underwent a renal transplant last year and just recently there have been some problems with it. I don't know what course of action they are taking for her kidney, however, her doctor seemed to be very concerned about how her kidney problems might affect her Thyroid. My question is, How is the Thyroid affected by Renal Failure or impaired renal function. my friend and I are both in Nuclear Medicine, we have some understanding of the basics but would like a more technical yet clearer understanding. I apologize if this should have been posted in the kidney forum.

Thank you

The thyroid has an effect on every organ in the body, kidney included. Remember, all cells need thyroid hormone to function.
