Wow many thanks for all you answer, I just took my meds again today, only 5mg/day until I have my bllod work done, mu other question is how long doea this rashes will stay? Now its about 10days already since these rashes came out, and actually I dont know how all theaw rashes looks like because they are different kinds of rashes all over my body. Again many thanks for any inputs.
"Ok, I Just thoughy that 24deg is a warm temp." Depends on whether you're talking about Celsius or Fahrenheit. 24 C converts to 75.2 F, so you might find that, too warm, though typically, it's not that warm. Since you've stopped your anti-thyroid medication, you are quite likely back to hyper, so 24 C might be too warm for you.
While it's good to rely on symptoms, you also need to have adequate blood work done, in order to stay on top of your condition.
Rashes are often caused by an adverse reaction to a particular substance. It's highly unlikely that you would start reacting to your thyroid medication after 7 months. Some people get a rash if they sweat a lot.
You need to see your doctor, to determine what the rash is, get proper blood work and get back on your medication. It's never a good idea to just stop medication, without your doctor's blessing. If you are reacting to the med, it's quite likely, s/he can give you a different one, that you won't react to.
Ok, I Just thoughy that 24deg is a warm temp. Because I ask most of colleages if they feel cold at that temp. And they say no, by the way I will have my blood work done if i already have the chance, as of now im only relying on symptoms thats why I stopped my medication without myndoctors recomendation, because i thought my rashes are coming out because I am on the hypo side now, as I have read on other post that hypo are havingbrashes.
At 24 degrees, I think most of us would feel chilly......no, at 24 degrees, I feel downright cold...... really 24 degrees is not a warm temp.
If your thyroid is getting larger, that would indicate inflammation, but if you palpate (check) it too much you can cause it to swell.
Blood test will tell you more than palpating your thyroid........ get TSH, FT3, FT4......
Thanks for your reply, I really want to have my blood test to be done, but at the moment I can not do it because I work on a ship and we are now at sea what symptoms i noticed is now i am sensitive to cold, at 24deg. Temparature i still feel chilly, the right side of my face sometimes is tingling and i noticed that my thyroid got big i think since i am alqays checking it before while i am taking meds. So i think will jiat continue my meds again since i also think that its impossible to have the allergic reaction after 7months
It's unlikely that you'd get a rash like that from the medication, but not impossible, though I'd doubt that it would take 7 months to have a reaction to it.
It's also unlikely that you'd get the rash from going hypo. We'd have to see current lab results in order to tell whether you are hyper or hypo. Do you have labs you can post, with reference ranges? You should be getting tested for TSH, FT3 and FT4.
Do you have any other symptoms?
"rash after a few months on methimazole...
I really appreciate all the feedback I'm getting! Now, that I'm aware that I don't necessarily have to stop the methimazole after 18 months-- I've only been taking 10mg/day & did fine until I went off. I just have a concern re: this rash I developed after about 8 months on the drug. My MD doesn't think it's from the med since it took so long to develop. I didn't have it when I was initially diagnosed, so don't think it's the usual rash from Graves'. Could it be from methimazole? It seemed to start to fade after about 2wks off of it, but once I went back on, the rash got worse. It's concentrated on my mid-back mostly, but some on upper back & slowly spreading to my sides/front. Is that a serious side-effect or just a minor one? I'm in the process of seeking a different Endo that can help me with the next phase of my recovery. Thanks again for your insight!
Re: rash after a few months on methimazole...
Hi,
Often, rash appears when the ATD dose is too high. You want to be using the lowest dose needed to keep FT4 in range, preferably near the high end of the range. Like with a range of 0.8-1.8 you'd want to be on a dose that causes your FT4 to be around 1.6 or so. The usual maintenance dose, after the first 6 weeks on meds, is 2.5--10. mg daily. I was thinking you said your FT4 was around 1.3. If so, you might be able to get by with a dose of 2.5 mg methimazole daily.
Rash is considered a minor symptom and it's sometimes treated with diphenhydramine (Benadryl) although this can cause drowsiness. There are also a number of different skin disorders that can occur in people with Graves' disease. I have some articles on them in the archives. People with Graves' disease are also more likely to develop food sensitivities and allergies than other people.
Also, most people who react to one drug do fine on the other. If the rash continues even on a lower dose of the drug, you could ask your doctor about switching to PTU. Best, Elaine"
