Hypothyroid and Pregnancy

We had been trying to conceive for about 4 years now and nothing was happening. We did fertility drugs and tests, but nothing. Finally i found out that i had Graves disease. I had my thyroid nuked and have been on synthroid for about a year now to lower my levels. I am almost "normal" We want to start trying again, but were told that if i get pregnant before my levels are normal that our baby could be mentally or physically retarded. I am just trying to figure out how long AFTER my levels are normal i should wait before we start trying again?

Hi,

for pregnancy the doctors like to see TSH in the range of 1 - 2.

However, even more important is to test FT3 and FT4 and these should be at least mid-range or upper 1/2 of the range.  During pregnancy numbers should be kept at least mid or upper half of the range by adjust ing meds.

If your FT3 and FT4 aree ok and your doctor clears you go ahead.

No need to be at normal for a certain time before trying.  Just regular monitoring and adjusting as necessary.

If you do get pregnant you need to test immeidately and probably increase meds about 20%.  Testing during pregnancy is montly, and meds may need to be increased quite a bit.

Best wishes
