Hypothyroid misdianosis?

My Dr. just gave me a prescription for Synthroid for hypothyroidism. My TSH was at 3.502 and at 2.921 a few days later. I have several hyperthyroid symtoms, including heart palpitations, hair loss, anxiety, accelerated heart rate, infrequent periods, tremors, fatigue, sleeplesness, and muscle weakness. I think the only symptom I am lacking is weight loss. I am actually gaining weight. Does this diagnosis sound right? I am not sure what kind of testing I should request to make sure the treatment is appropriate for the symptoms, and several of the listed side effects for Synthroid are symtoms that I am already experiencing. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I have had the same symptoms when hypo.
Most think anxiety and fast heart rate is hyper...thats not always the case.
Sally is right and a FT3 & FT4 test shouldve been run too.
Your tsh is high (hence the hypo symptoms) but yr Free's may be high and causing 'crossover' symptoms.....both hyper and hypo.
Get your Free T3 and Free T4 tested like Sally says.

Hi,

did your doctor test antibodies, FT3, FT4?  Is your thyroid enlarged?  Are there any nodules or anything else to indicate may be hypo?

How old are you?  Do you have any other health issues?

Unless your antibodies are high, with a TSH of 3.5 I would think that observation i probably the best approach rather than starting on meds.  With a TSH of 3.5 the diagnosis would be marginal - unless you also had clear hypothyroid symptoms - which from your description you do not have.

Your symptoms could be hyper or it could be something else.  DId your Dr look for toehr causes of your symptoms.

You could be at the early stages where thyroid levels would fluctuate - sometimes high, sometimes low.

What dosage of synthroid did he prescribe?

Please provide more info.  At least you probably should be closely observed - maybe with repeat testing every 3 months for a while to see what is happening...

Others with chime in here.

Best regards
