Do benign or malignant thyroid tumors have different symptoms?

Hello,

I have a lump on the left side of my thyroid. (I am a 33 years old, by the way.) I had an ultrasound today and of course, am awaiting results. I am having quite a few symptoms that are scaring me, and so, I am wondering if benign and malignant thyroid tumors have the same or different systems. (It's so hard to wait for results!) My symptoms are: a sore throat, ear pain, a little hoarseness, weight loss (I weight 100 pounds now. I am 5' 2"), a little difficultly breathing, a feeling of being punched in my chest when I walk for a while.

I realize that a diagnosis cannot be given here. That is not what I am asking for. I am just curious if my symptoms could be a sign of either type of tumor. I know there are a lot of people here who have gone through what am going through now, and thus, am just looking for support and wisdom. :-) Thank you so much! :-)

Thank you so much for your response! :-) The more that I researched my symptoms and such, it does seem to be leaning towards hyperthyroidism. I go to the doc today to get the results from my ultrasound. (To answer your question, I have not had any blood work...just the ultrasound.) I'm a nervous wreck but am also relived at the same time. I'm ready to get this show on the road and find out what's wrong with me. I'm also ready to feel better and the best way to feel better is to find out what's wrong first so it can be treated. ;-) So doctor...here I come! ~lol~

The symptoms of benign and malignant nodules are the same.  You can't infer anything from symptoms.

However, the vast majority of thyroid nodules are benign.  Many thyroid diseases are characterized by nodlules.  If they are large, they are often biosied.  If small (less than 1 cm, usually) they are just monitored periodically for changes.

Your symptoms sound hyper.  Have you had any thyroid blood work or just the U/S?

P.S. I forgot to add that I heart races quite a bit, I feel hot and my hands sweat more than normal. Thanks so much...
