Urgent question "energy drinks" and blood test tomorrow

Ok, so I just went through 2 surgeries to remove my thyroid and was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. I have my RAI treatment next week April 3rd but I have to do a blood test tomorrow to check my Thyroid levels. So before my life goes crazy, I am trying to stay up tonight to get some papers and computer programs done and I normally drink those 5-hour energy drinks to keep me focused as you can guess that I get tired very very quickly.

Does anyone think these may mess up my blood test results? I wouldnt think so but maybe someone here has experienced it before?

With those symptoms, you should definitely go ahead and get the additional testing for Free T3 and free T4, along with the TSH.  I also suggest that you should find out if Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is involved, by testing for the thyroid antibodies, TPO ab and TG ab.

Since many hypothyroid patients are low in other areas, I suggest testing for Vitamin A, D, B12, and RBC magnesium.  Later, probably good to test for zinc, and selenium as well.

As I mentioned before, when results are available,  get a copy of the lab report and post results and their reference ranges shown on the lab report, and members will be glad to help interpret results and advise further.

Thank you so much for all the helpful hints and tips! I checked out the link and found that I actually have quite a few of these symptoms. Here are the ones I've noticed:

Feeling tired (fatigue) and sluggishness
Slow movement and speech
Constipation
Increased sensitivity to cold
Joint and muscle pain, aches, and stiffness
Difficulty catching your breath (severe shortness of breath) when exercising

No.  Also, you should be aware that TSH is a pituitary hormone that is affected by so many variables that it is inadequate as the sole diagnostic for thyroid.  At best it is an indicator, to be considered along with more important indicators such as symptoms, and also levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, which are Free T3 and Free T4 (not the same as Total T3 and Total T4).  Free T3 is the most important because it largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions.  Scientific studies have also shown that Free T3 correlated best with hypo symptoms, while Free T4 and TSH did not correlate.

Have a look at this listing of 26 typical hypothyroid symptoms and tell us how many you think you have.

If you have never been tested for Free T3 and Free T4, then you should make sure that happens each time you go to the doctor.  If you will get those done, and then get a copy of the lab report and post results and their reference ranges shown on the lab report, members will be glad to help interpret results and advise further

I am wondering about this myself. I know I'm supposed to fast for 12 hours before blood work, but I also work 24 hour shifts and was getting labs done in the morning. I drank an energy drink at around 10pm, then got blood drawn the following morning at 7:30. Results came back that I had hypothyroidism. TSH levels were at 14.50 I believe. Could the energy drink have caused it?

Did you check that product for Iodine? I would assume you are on the LID too. Hypohe// is rough. Even though I never had to stop taking my Armour for any reason - I remember suffereing horribly with hypothyroid being under medicated for so long.

I know the desperation on needing a lift when things need to be accomplished, but just remember - your putting those fake energy boosters in and they will alter your other hormones and organs ( liver - heart - kidneys) even in small increments.

Since RAI is Iodine - adding the 5 hr drinks in close to your procedure could surge you into hyperness too.

I  think you need to eliminate them completely.

I hear you, my reason for taking the energy drink last night was because I am not on any Thyroid medication what-so ever since early March. The doctor told me I cannot take any Thyroid medication until April 7th, so I am swinging into a heavy Hypo range before my radiation Treatment,

5 hour energy actually does work for me, but I only take it like once every 2 months or so and I dont drink coffee. Different people's bodies react to caffeine differently. Its very rare that I have to use them.

I'd be very careful continuing to supplement with those energy drinks. While I don't think it will effect any of the thyroid labs, down the road you will find if you keep up the pace and push your body into that cycle of fake energy, you will exhaust many other parts of your endocrine system.

Caffeine knocks out the adrenals and those work very closely with thyroid function. At this time and for life you soley are dependant on thyroid medication. You need healthy adrenals to keep things running appropriately.

Energy drinks contain a ton of caffeine..no matter how fancy they label it, Taurine, Guarana..it's still caffeine. The only problem you might have is that you are so jittery you won't sit still long enough for the needle to go in! LOL!
There should be no problems with the test...they are looking specifically for thyroid hormones not caffeine addiction! Hee hee.
Good luck!
