Starting Cytomel

Woo Hoo!  Finally I hope to get the relief I need.  I was being a very squeaky wheel.  Great advice from someone here!  The doctor did not even call me.  I just checked my prescription website and the Cytomel was there.  I have the generic.  She gave me 5mcg a day.  My question is I guess should I start out with a half twice a day, or go for the whole 5mcg?  I have no idea what my lab results are.  Maybe she faxed them to work already.  Anything to shut me up!!! :)  I will post those when I get them.  My hypo symptoms have been really bad so hopefully this improves things for me before I get fired from my job because I can't focus.

Your total T4 is a result of any available natural thyroid hormone plus the Synthroid you are taking.  Clearly you are not converting T4 to T3 adequately, thus your FT3 is much lower in the range than T4.  So that high T4 really is not doing much for you and could be reduced.  Perhaps a reduction to 100 might get you to a lower, and better, level.  I would be sure to ask the doctor about any reduction before doing it, just to maintain that close relationship with your doctor.  LOL

I looked back over some prior posts but didn't see anything about a cause for your hypothyroidism.  Have you ever been tested for the thyroid antibodies, TPO ab and TG ab?

Thank you for your response.  Not sure if my doctor will ever want to speak to me again.  LOL.  I have an appointment with my new doctor on September 14th.  I am sure I won't die from anything until then.

I have been tested and I have Hashimoto's disease.  I also have a small goiter.

I am a little concerned now about the Synthroid.  It says my T4 is high.  Maybe I should cut it in half with the Cytomel also.  Here are my new results.  I know the lab orders stated Free T4 but they did not run it that way.

TSH                    1.690  (0.450-4.500)
Free T3                2.3     (2.0-4.4)
Total T3               118     (71-180)
T4                       16.4    (4.5-12.0)

So as you can see I was tanked on my FT3 but my T4 is really high?  Any thoughts on why that would be?

If your FT4 is around midrange, then I would not worry about the 137 mcg of Synthroid.

As for the Cytomel, I'd suggest that you split it in half and take in two doses.

Just one question.  The doctor did not lower my Synthroid.  I am on 137mcg.  Along with the Cytomel how much will that put me at?  I am going to take a half in the morning and then another later on if I feel alright.
