Hello,
You must be a West coaster? :P So, the answer is yes, you can take it. What the potassium iodide does is occupy the thyroid in place of regular iodine to prevent radioactive iodine nesting in your thyroid and causing thyroid cancer. I'm presuming you are hypothyroid since you are taking l-thyroxine. A pokey thyroid is actually a bit of a protection (the folks without one don't need to take the potassium iodide at all). If you are on the west coast, you can monitor the milliseverts (used to called rads) in the air over your area via the internet. If the level hits 100+, then it is time to take daily doses until the level drops again. You can also protect yourself by remaining indoors as much as possible (it falls from the sky -especially when it rains) and being very careful of drinking water collected from the open or eating fresh foods grown in the fallout area. Remove your shoes outside of your door to prevent tracking it through the house, and thoroughly wash pet and child feet and legs in uncontaminated water. I hope this helps! ~MM
