Levothyroxin and constipation?

After a few blood tests with hypothyroid levels and antibodies, I had an ultrasound that revealed a small goiter.

I haven't experienced any thyroid symptoms that I know of. My doctor put me on Levothroxin (the generic of Synthyroid). I think those are the correct names but I don't have the bottle with me. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, it's been about 2 or 3 weeks and I'm noticing that I'm pretty constipated and bloated. Is that normal and if so, is it okay to take a laxative every once in a while? I heard something about it affecting the effectiveness of the drug.
After you get used to the drug, do those side effects stop?

Since I've never had a thyroid problem in my life, when my goiter clears up, will my levels go back to normal or will I be taking this medication and having to watch my levels for the rest of my life?

Thanks for your input!

Thanks so much for your help. I'll be heading to GNC tomorrow to pick that stuff up.

Do you take multi vitamins? I've stopped b/c I've also heard horror stories on getting too much iron and how that can be bad when you're on this medication as well. What's your take on that?

Also - what probiotic do you recommend? Do you have certain ones that you take?

Thanks again!

Being hypothyroid - it is common for you to feel "blocked up" ( at least that is what I call it.

You can take a laxative but anything in it with a magnesium base you must not let it interfere with your meds for at least 4 hrs.

I suggest - since things seem to be slowing a bit with you now - as I was very bloated and stuffed up -  you start a solid regimen of probiotics and digestive supplements ( I found peppermint oil pills most effective along with a probiotic) instead of laxitives.

Lax's eventually will make you dependable to take them if this bout becomes a long haul for you. Your body could normalize after things get in check with the medication - but some do have the situation linger on even after they stabilize. Your better off practicing on getting your digestive system strong since this just started for you.

It's hard to say how long you will remain on medication for this - The Thyroid seems to sometimes have a mind all it's own and we never can tell what the future will bring.
