Low Thyroid and difficulty loosing weight

Is Leptin Resistance a common problem for those with Hashimoto's and if so how is it diagnosed and treated.

There is a MedHelp Weight Loss and Dieting forum...you might try that.

Although I agree that low FT3 and FT4, slow conversion and a low FT3/RT3 ratio can all make it almost impossible to lose weight, I feel some of this doctor's treatments may be distinctly "alternative", and not mainstream medicine.

I also fought my weight all my life.  I always said that if I wasn't starving myself, I was gaining weight.  My body had no vested interest in maintaining my weight whatsoever.  In retrospect, I believe I've been slightly hypo all my life.  When I was finally diagnosed, and my thyroid meds were adjusted properly, I spontaneously lost 25 lbs. without trying or doing anything differently.  Since then (about 1 1/2 years ago), I have maintained my weight while eating whatever I want to eat (after having dieted all my life, I'm much more conservative than most about what I stuff down my throat, however).  The difference is that now what I can eat is much more in line with "normal" people.

If I were you (just my opinion), I'd try to get my FT3 in line and see what that does for your weight issues.  You might be amazed by how much it changes things.

Thanks for your opinion on this.  I suspect the adjustment to thyroid should help a lot and am hoping so.  Right now I am waiting for my new medication to come in the mail.  I truly think my thyroid has not been truly adjusted all these years.  I don't think my Free T3 was ever tested before. For sure I have always had hypo symptoms and they have never gone completely away.  I did note improvement with levothyroxine of some symptoms

SO I am going to hold a positive thought on this and see what happens once I start taking the new medication.  My guess is that will also have to be tweaked since so many others have noted such.  Marie

I was about to go to another forum when I found this article which talks about a segment of thyroid patients who have difficulty losing weight due to Leptin resistance.  It goes into more detail about fat storage and reverse T3 and a decrease in Free T3 conversion.
I have struggled with weight loss all my life and wonder if I have this problem.  I don't actually know how common it is or if it is mainstream medicine or not. I do have low free T3 and Hashimoto's and an uncommon resistance to losing weight.  If anyone else has any experience with this I would be eager to hear about their diagnoses and treatment. Marie.

Thanks for that information.  I think then I will try another forum like one associated with weight loss.  Marie

I have not seen it discussed here before (doesn't mean it hasn't been, but I have been around for a while!), so I would have to say that it's not commonly associated with Hashi's.
