Miserable

I went to the Dr as I had an inability to lose weight and tired and swelling in fingers and feet. I have been on Armour for the past 7 months and was on Synthoid for 9 months prior to that. I took 120mcg of Armour (2 grains) and 100 mcg of Synthoid when I was on that.

I eat a low carb diet (40 - 80g a day) and was not losing weight. I also put on a huge amount of weight in December when I went off my diet for a few weeks after my mom died and the holidays. I gained 15 lbs in Dec.

In early January I went to the Dr and he pt me on Phetermine to lose weight. I did not lose any weight despite the strict low carb diet/walking I was following. In mid Feb he took me off and did a few tests. Cortisol AM was 6.4, TSH was .045, T4 was .87 and Free T3 was 3.25. He said i had too much thyroid med in my system and had to go off them. He referred me to an endo.

Went to the end last week. He said to stay off all meds until he could get a baseline. He felt a node in the thyroid and I had a ultrasound last week. He also siad I was insulin resistant and he would put me on medication for that after the blood work. I do not know the results yet. I cannot have more bloodwork Wed. I am exhausted (like sleeping constantly cannot do anything that requires any energy), I have gained 5 lbs, fluid retention is awful, horrible constipation (like have to use an enema almost every day), and my neck and upper back are killing me. I am not living life and am just exhausted and it is worse every day. I cannot have bloodwork for another few days, and then it will take a week or so after to get results and then to get back and will take weeks to feel better....I cannot put my life on hold for one more month or more while I sleep. I need to work and travel for work. I have a presenttion in a few weeks I do not know how I will handle it like this. I honestly can barely get out of bed and my stomoch hurts everytime I eat.

Has anyone heard of a Dr "baslining" like this? I did not realize it would be so severe.

Please make sure you get a copy of your lab report for your records, then post the reference ranges for the T3 and T4, and let us know if they are Free or Total.

I received my results over the phone I do not know my ranges. I have not been off for almost 4 weeks, I was able to get blood drawn yesterday and will talk to the Dr on Monday. I am exhausted, weak, and have a severe headache. I did get back my thyroid ultrasound results...I have 5 nodes. Two are large and need a biopsy.

The insulin resistance was due to 5 differnt criteria I had from bloodwork last summer. My Trig were high, my waist was the right size, blood pressure is way up to 140/90, Cholsterol was over 200, and something else.

I called the end yesterday and told him I was miserable. He said he had to look at the bloodwork and just to hold out until Monday.

What are the reference ranges for the T3 and T4?  Are they Free or Total?  What is your endo basing his thoughts on?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I don't really see anything in your results that indicates you are over medicated.

He also can't know you are insulin resistant without the proper testing!!

Base lining? Is the guy nuts? Does he have your thyroid levels from when you were perfectly healthy to base this judgement?
You may well be taking too much Armour and your body is reacting, but by taking you off like that is going to make you hypo pretty darned quickly.
Phentermine works pretty much the same as an anti-depressant and as such is not a good thing for thyroid patients. I don't know when doctors will take the time to educate themselves!

I am curious, how did the endo know you are insulin resistant? Did he do testing?

Any pain in the neck needs to be taken seriously, as it could be anything from a fracture (can happen even in our sleep!) to meningitis. I would be going to see another doctor or going to an ER to get checked out. If you choose to go to ER do ask if they will run new thyroid tests as well.

I do feel for you, as I have lived that horrendous place you are in right now, but hang in there, and know you are with people who will help and walk you through your hard times.
Cheers
