Weight Gain and Hyperthyroidism

I was just told by my doctor that I have Hyperthyroidism. He asked me if I was losing weight but quite the contrary it seems that I've gained about 20-30 pounds. If he starts me on medication, will I continue to gain weight?

Thank you, gimel. I actually have an appointment to see an endocrinologist whom my cardiologist referred. Let me see how that appointment goes and also in the meantime I'll try to post my test results. I know they tested for TSH, T3 and T4 so I'll try to get that info ASAP.

Thank you again gimel and have a very happy holiday!

There is really no way to determine hyperthyroid versus hypothyroid without more info to assess.  For example if your doctor diagnosed hyperthyroidism based on a low TSH reading, that by itself is not conclusive.  If you haven't been tested beyond TSH, you really need additional tests.  If you have additional test info, we need to see the results and reference ranges.

If you decide to go to another doctor, I have to warn you that it is difficult to find a good thyroid doctor.  If you are interested I do have the name of a member recommended doctor in the Ventura area.  Are you interested?

Hi gimel. Well, I really do have a great Maxillo-facial oral surgeon. He's been quite thorough. He needs to put me under general anesthesia in order to put in 8 titanium implants but said my thyroid tests were too high. I'll call his office tomorrow to get my lab results and will post on here right away. I'm very appreciative to you for responding.

I wanted to ask another question, if I may. I've read on the internet that a symptom of Hyperthyroidism is weight loss but I've gained about 25-35 lbs already since July 2013. Shouldn't I be losing instead of gaining? I recently stopped using Crystal Meth too after 15 years.

Can you get a copy of the lab report?  If not, could you call again and get the results, along with reference ranges and post so that we can assess the adequacy of your testing and treatment?  Please tell us about any symptoms also.

I thought that the Periodonists had developed new procedures that were so effective that oral surgery was practically a thing of the past.

Oh gosh, I wish my doctor gave me my blood test results over the phone. All he said was that he was referring me to an endocrinologist. I suppose my rush is because my oral surgery got postponed and I really wanted to have my All-on-4 procedure done before Christmas. It just seems everything is going wrong. Thank you so much for responding to me, gimel.

On what basis did he diagnose hyperthyroidism?  If it was blood test results, please post results and reference ranges shown on the lab report. Do you have any other symptoms?
