Neck Swelling

On January 27, 2010 I received RAI.  Two weeks after my proceedure my neck swelled up.  After calling my different doctors I was finally seen by my Primary care. At that point I was placed on 60mg of steroids for a week.  As soon as I stopped the steroids, my neck swelled up again along with the worse burning sensation.  I ended up in the ER where they once again put me on 5mg of Steroids for 1 week.   I was finally able to see my Endo yesterday.  I was told that 1 in 300,000  people have this happen.  Surprise!!!!!!   I understand this does not happen to everyone but I do think they should have warned me about it.  Everything I read prior to having RAI said nothing about this happening.  I am lucky at this point,  it has been almost a month and my levels are great.  Just wish I didn't feel so miserable.

I had the neck swelling and burning after RAI but about 12 hours after RAI.
I was told it is the FT3 being high.
Get the FT3, FT4 and TSH done.......
You may still be a little Hyper and need anti-thyroid meds for a week or two.
This isnt unsual with RAI. Sometimes the thyroid goes beserk from the RAI as it is a large dose of iodine going to your thyroid.
Also if you find that the FT3 or FT4 is still high...a beta blocker would be the best thing until the symptoms start to be less severe.
Hope that helps..
