Advice for Hypothyroidism please

My wife was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism when we had routine blood tests analysed for our pregnancy (currently 14 weeks). The initial TSH reading was 9.83mIU/L and a week later it jumped to 15.30. After being on 50micrograms of thyroxine, a test one month later shows 7.43 - this is still above the accepted range of 0.35 - 5.5.
My question is, should she switch from the 50mcg to the 75mcg dose of thyroxine (which a very disinterested local GP suggested) or should she persevere with the 50mg as this seems to be working; albeit slowly
Thank you for your time

Hello,

it is very important to keep TSH levels low in pregnancy.  YOur wife definitely should increase to the 75 mcg dose.  She should also be tested again in 4 weeks and if her TSH is not 1- 2, she should increase her dose again.

If possible the doctors should also be asked to test for FT3 and FT4.  These should be at the top of their ranges.  If they are low in range (below middle), it also would indicate that an increase in meds is required.

Thanks a lot for the advice Super_sally. We have the referral/advice to return in 4 weeks for a follow up blood test so ill grab the 75mcg and start them now, then take it from there.

Thanks for the response however i feel i mustnt have explained properly - it was 'our' GP, it was just some random doctor at a random clinic that didnt seem to give 2 hoots and didnt really review any information; hence why i dont really trust the advice

If you GP suggested the switch, that's probably would you should do. I am in the same boat, currently 9 weeks pregnant and my T4 has declined drastically and TSH is up drastically... I am still in range but close to being out but she is keeping me on 50mg for now. I have to get rechecked in 6 weeks. I am just choosing to trust my GP, they know what to do...even though I am seeing MATERNAL FETAL SPECIALIST.  Pregnancy and thyroid = high risk pregnancy.

Good luck to you.
