Hi there,
I was told not to hand washing out or do anything with my hands above my head for at least two weeks after my TT.

I know you have financial pressures BUT there are worse things - such as prolonging your recovery because you weren't able to take the time to rest.

I know that you've not been running anywhere near 100% for a long while now and you just really want everything to get back to normal NOW.  It will - but the secret ingredient is TIME!

(I'm also an Aussie) - Did you know you can go to Centrelink and talk to them about a sickness benefit until you are fit to return to work?  Might be a good option to look into.  Better to do that than go back to early and further delay your recovery, have to go back on leave and further frustrate your employer.

The operation you just had is a major one - and you didn't exactly have a smooth ride.  Complications can lengthen your recovery period.  Not the kind of news you want to hear, I know - sorry.

"No-one has told me what I can and cannot do" - that's because we are all different, some lucky people (who we are both jealous of) are okay after a week.  My TT was 30th Nov last year - it was around the two month mark that I really began to feel a lot better.  Before that any exertion knocked me about and and I had to lay low for the following day(s).  And I took it really easy for the whole first two months.  I returned to work about 6 or 7 weeks after TT, just for short shifts, but they still knocked me about - and I didn't have the complications you have had.

It can take anywhere between 6 and 12 weeks to start feeling good on your thyroxine meds (if the dosage is about right- longer if dosage requires adjusting).

How long will your swelling last? Well again the answer is everyone is different - but I would imagine that you could need longer than just Monday and Tuesday off work to rest and give the swelling a chance to subside.  REST IS THE KEY!!!!  You already know that movement is increasing the swelling.

All this resting can be really frustrating for some people (myself included) - BUT if your body is not ready to tackle the world yet you won't be able to fight it / won't do you any good if you try to fight it.

If your surgeon is reluctant to give you longer off work (which would totally surprise me) an understanding GP should be happy to give you a certificate and fill out the forms for Centrelink.  My guess is you could need anywhere from a month or more off work.  They will review as you go anyway - the govt doesn't pay for holidays LOL!!!

I hope I haven't brought you down.  I know you really anticipate getting back to work ASAP but it doesn't seem very realistic with all that your poor body has been through lately.  Give yourself a chance to heal.

Please keep us updated on your journey.
Best wishes - thinking of you.

Thanks :) I have bought a Cooling Neck brace - its like a thin ice pack you wear as a necklace, see how that goes.

The thing that hurt the most was driving a car (looking over my shoulder to change lanes and the seatbelt) and lifting my head off the pillow.

For all my incisions I've kept ice on them nearly round the clock - especially when I had an ovary removed last year with a huge cyst - I was iced up for weeks!!!

I'm sorry that you aren't healing as quickly!  :-(

My thoughts and prayers to you.

DR told me that I need to take Monday and Tuesday off work too :( Avoid movement in my neck to help reduce swelling and if still there Mon/Tues go get an ultrasound.  I walked out crying.  HOW LONG DID EVERYONE'S SWELLING LAST? No-one has told me what I can and cannot do - grrrr the surgeons said the more I move the quicker I will heal  now I get told movement is causing swelling.  I have hung out the odd load of washing, washed a few dishes made a salad - is that too much? Oh and gone for a walk around the shops a few time.  Please please tell me what you all did.

I sounds like hypo feelings (crying, yelling, lack of energy, depression) but could also be a bit from recovering from a traumatic injury (surgery).  I didn't have the amount of swelling you are describing.  I know your surgeon said it's okay but why don't you check it out with your GP just in case.  Some people (doctors included) don't like to admit when they are wrong.  :-)

**ICE** is the trick for swelling.  Every time I laid down I had an ice pack on my neck (wrap it in a soft towel to protect your skin).

GET BETTER SOON!!

Hey there, tried ice last night, other than hurt it brought the swelling down mildly, but as soon as my neck went back to normal temp. the swelling came back.

Woke up this morning yet again with a golf ball size lump of swelling behing my scar and above and below my scar!  Hadnt had time to get out of bed and overdo it! So first thing I did after taking my medication was call the GP, going to see them at 1:10pm today - returning to work Monday, but the swelling hurts and is restrictive, I NEED THIS RESOLVED :( I have no paid leave left and cant really afford to take more time off, sad when $ runs our recovery

I hope the ice helps (and your GP).  Get better soon!!

Hi guys, it wont let me post another question and wanted to ask yesterday - POST OP -

How long did swelling normally last? I keep swelling up, like a golf ball behind my scar each day, today is 9 day post op and the more swelling that come up the more pain I feel, uncomfortable to swallow, move neck (not terrible pain - frustrating pain) but swelling looks yuck and I really am not trying to over do it.  I am concerned that doing the odd dishes and stuff is causing this and I am due to return to work Monday full time.  Still have not been confident enough to drive (due to swelling and restriction of neck) the Surgeon said it all looks good but I dont know?  Is there any tricks to reduce swelling?

Thanks SOOO Much oh AND......  Started medication on Wednesday (today Friday) Wednesday was happier feeling more like me, yesterday I cried over and over again and he most stupid things. Is this from Hypo? or any clues?

Moles.  Man, I can tell you about moles.  I have many many pre-cancerous melanoma ones that have come back atypical and needing to be re-excised to the tune of 12-15 stitches .. about 8 of them over the past 8 yrs ... I hope your mole is ok . .any word back on that yet?

Glad you are beginning to feel better, you really had a rough time and based on what the surgeon says I guess it makes sense but not makes it easier to heal from

Sis you take your time so you can heal.I bet you are like alot of us that care so much for others we forget to take care of ourselves.I know I have been frustrated to no end waiting for my sternum to heal after have a tennis ball size goiter taken out back in September.
So you rest.heal and I will be sending good energy to speed the healing.

Hi there, thanks for the thought.  The Surgeon said, "its no wonder I was having pain and discomfort, the goiter was Huge and trying to get that out and my entire thyroid was a task"  The bruising keeps spreading as the swelling is going up and down, so gravity takes over.  NO CANCER, but I never saw the path report, I am trusting him! He said things will ease with time, which is true.  Unfortunatly I am not a "resting" type and try to do a bit more each day which knocks me flat on my back and the swelling comes up.  Hubby has been FANTASTIC, he has done SO SO much.  We are both back to work Monday though.  Today is 7 days post op, still cannot drive too much stiffness, still taking pain meds, couple times a day.  Started medication today, 100mg, bloods scheduled in 6 weeks to assess levels are right for me.  But I have to say - I am beginning to feel happier and slowly healthier.  My 2 cents (its been worse than child birth) I think the vommitting on night no 1 probably hurt things, then the ear infection, but I have two cuts as they took out a suspicious mole on my neck at the same time and I am now really self concious about my neck.  Stitches are out and there has been some ooz and a small section that looks not closed so trying not to put anything on it.  Boy oh Boy what a long story.  Thanks for your time.
