No Fiber

I have been instructed by my endo not to eat breakfast foods containing fiber until 4 hrs. after taking Synthroid.  So far I have only come up with Egg Sub. Most foods do contain fiber. Any suggestions short of taking pill in the middle of the night?

It is my understanding that the fiber, calcium and anti acids grab onto the thyroid meds thus preventing them to do their job efficiently.  Before my thyroidectomy, my instructions were to avoid soy products and not to eat fiber cereals within 4 hrs. of taking the syntroid.

Apparently the doctor feels my reading (can't tell you what it is) should be better than what it is.  I am on 137 units and she does not want to increase it.  She feels that the reading might be better if fiber and calcium were unable to grab onto the meds.

I don't go back for 6 months, so time will tell I guess.

Now if you still have your thryroid, the story might be different.  I know my sister is hyper and her instructions are to wait one hour before eating.

Hi,

actually, it doesn't matter how you take it as long as you are consistent and always do it the same way, don't change it.

If you always eat 50g of fibre at breakfast then your dose of T4 may be 100 mcg.
If you wait 2 hours before eating then maybe the same patient would only need 75 mcg.

The meds would be adjusted according to how it is absorbed based on what you usually do.

I normally get up at 6 take meds, eat breakfast and dash off to work or gym or whatever before 7.  This works for me.  I am not going to wait till 8 or 10 to eat!  I am a mornign person and need my morning feed.  Only alternative would be for me to take the meds at night 2 hours after dinner (normally don't do much dinner) and before sleeping...

Just my opinion.  Whatever works for you, but be consistent.

Okay, now I am REALLY confused!  I've been taking armour for 3 years. I have instructions that are the same as synthroid or levothroid. I don't get it! Worse yet, I'm a pharmacy technician, but I feel like I haven't learned anything!! And, I talk to pharmacists and physicians each and every day . Why is it that they don't recommend taking armour after food? Do y ou mean like right after eating? Is this why I feel so HORRIBLE! Should I still be avoiding calcium and other supplements for 4 hours? ARRRGGGHHH!
Charlie Brown has nothing on me! I feel like the ball  has been pulled away and I've landed on my butt, and my pride!

Armour is generally taken after food. It has T3 in it so it needs the food to help it bind in the blood stream. Crazy isn't it!  Synthroid before food as it only has T4 in it.

So is this just synthroid?  Or is like that with the armour too?

Because the doctor was not quite pleased with my initial 6 wk post thyroidectomy  blood reading and she doesn't want to raise my 137 unit Synthroid dosage.

It was the same intructions prior to the operation so maybe it is just her way of doing business.

YOu are right, taking the pill much earlier in the morning should do the trick.  Right now I am taking Synthroid around 6:30, 3 blood pressure pills, Lipitor and Baby Aspirin at 9:00 and Prevacid at 11.  The I fit 2 calcium tablets and a vitamin pill in during the afternoon.

This whole thing is not a big deal for me, it is just getting used to not having my routine Shredded Wheat or Special K first thing in the morning.  Sometimes I have it for supper though.  I was not aware that most foods do contain fiber.

Most people are instructed to wait and hour or two.  My sister is hyperthyroid and still has her thyroid.  She only has to wait an hour.  I had thyroid cancer and had to have mine removed.  The doctor wasn't quite pleased with my reading at the 6 wk point.  My dosage is 137 units of synthroid and she does not want to go higher.  I feel fine, so don't want her to raise it either. It was the same before determining that I had the cancer.  Her idea is that if I avoid any foods that would grab the medication, the reading might improve.
I have to have the blood drawn in three more weeks, so time will tell.

I suspect there is fiber in english muffin and cheese.  My routine breakfast was 2 shredded wheat and banana or Special K and they both have fiber.

If you still have your thyroid, the rules may be different also.

Some doctors/endos say not to eat up to 4 hours after taking the thyroid replacement. It is regardless of fiber or not. I can see the logic in that though, but the body digests at the same rate regardless of what is in the stomach.
Best to avoid eating minimum of one hour, and do not take any other medications as well till at least 2 hours.
I personally have a very poor  intestinal digestive system..meaning I don't absorb tablets at all well, meaning they often come out the other end still whole! (Icky!!) But thyroxine is not in a liquid form, so I take it earlier in the morning then wait till brekky time to eat. About 1 and half hours later. I hate it but we don't have a choice!
It may be that you will have to learn to take it much earlier than you do now. You can still eat your normal breakfast, but 4 hours is the standard time the doctors have learnt is safest for the thyroxine to be absorbed into the blood stream.  4 hours is extreme, maybe you can wait 2 hours. Just a pain in the butt to have to learn to be different than we used to pre-thyroid disorder!

i knew about the calcium thing.  Was on synthroid for a year with no side effects, then ran out of my calcium.  Started going hyper within minutes of taking the synthroid.  I had been making it ineffective for over a year.  LoL.  When I started reading up on it and advised the dr.  He had no clue that calcium did that.  That is when I started getting all of my new diagnosis stuff. Hashis, cancer of thyroid, etc.  How rude.  I have no idea how long I have been dealing with Hashi's.

I did not know about the fiber.  Do english muffins contain a lot of fiber?  I have been nuking a scrambled egg for 40 seconds, throwing it on a muffin with a slice of cheese.  That completely gets me thru a long morning with less hungries.

My endo was not talking about extra fiber, she meant no fiber because it grabs ahold of the synthroid.  Same is true regarding Calcium tablet and my pill for GERD.

I used to take my thyroxin in the morning and a fibre drink around tea-time.
I havent had to take extra fibre now for some time.
