Oh! The Ringing!

I have been on a 50 mcg dose of levothyroxine for about 4-5 months, after the doc noticed in some blood work that I was on the high end of normal for my thyroid count (sorry, don't have numbers in front of me) ...
Almost immediately I noticed a distinct ringing in my ears.  I think it's from this whole thyroid thing but my doc dismisses it as coincidental.
So ... my question is this:  Can i stop taking this pill?  I have two months to wait to speak to my doctor about it again (just scheduled the appt), but this tinnitus is driving me crazy.  I've also been very irritable and short tempered.  Again, I was unaware of having a bum thyriod, and wasn't going to the doc to get symptoms checked .... I feel like maybe she was pill happy.  I wanna go off it for a few weeks, clean out my system, and see what happens to the ringing.  Any thoughts?  If I do this, and feel like @$$ afterwards, can i just hop back on the meds?  Please Help!!

As you noted, this is a very old post and I've seen the original poster on the forum for years, so it's unlikely you will get a response.

Maybe if you would start a new post of your own, others might chime in with their experiences, as I know there are some others who have experienced ear ringing.

If you decide to start another post, it would be good if you include your most recent thyroid lab results, along with the reference ranges from your lab report, since these vary from lab to lab, so must come from your own report. Once we see what your levels are, we might be able to offer suggestions that may help.  It would also be good to list any other symptoms you might be having.

Hi Ryants -
I know you posted this years ago and just wondered where you stood now with everything? I took Synthroid for 5 months and dealt with the ringing the whole time... Was told over and over that the meds weren't the cause.. I finallly found a doc who would switch me to Armour. I'm about 3 weeks in to Armour... Ringing has gone down, but I'm not having a great day with it today. It still seems to spike... Although, it's not as bad as it's been in the last few months.. If you happen to get this, please update us! It would help a lot! I'm curious if anyone had relief after switching.. and how long it took! Thank you :)

stopping my synthroid on my own due to anxiety feelings put me in the hospital. Its been four years now and still havn't gotten my levels back to where they were when I stopped taking. I had terrible ringing in my ears along with so many other symptoms. The ringing has gone away but am still having alot of symptoms. I truly wish that I would have never stopped taking my synthroid. Hyperthyroid can also cause ringing in your ears which I think is my case, but I faithfully take my synthroid daily and would never dream of discontinuing it again. Thyroid proplems can throw everything off whack and the right dose of synthroid can help to correct it.

I'm sorry you are feeling this way!  I haven't had any problems with ringing in my ears, but I did have major mood problems while on Levothyroxine.  I was extremely irritable, and very aggressive/defensive and anxious feeling.  I felt like I was going nuts, literally.  I had previously been on Armour thyroid for many years, but a new endo switched me to this, and royally screwed me up.  (My tsh went to 63.94!)  I was told it will be 6 weeks before the levothyroxine is out of my system.  (that's why you have to wait so long for blood work, it has to build up in your system.  I guess it's the same to get it out of your system.)  I stopped the Levothyroxine Friday as I couldn't take another day feeling like that.  I'm still feeling anxious and cranky, but not like I was before.  Maybe if you switch to Armour, you might feel better.  I hope you feel better soon!
